Auction alert: 20th Century Design & Retro Interiors

Franco Albini mid 20th century cane & bamboo satellite hoop chair

East Bristol Auctions is holding their 20th Century Design & Retro Interiors auction – including street art on Friday 1st October 2021 from 9:55am.

Justin is the one who first pointed me in the direction of this 20th Century Design & Retro Interiors sale. He already knew of East Bristol Auctions and thought it was a good one to share on our Auction Alert series. I looked at the catalogue and could have picked about ¾ of the 690 lots to feature – there’s some great quality on offer. The sale estimates, in my opinion, are temptingly low; ‘come and buy me’, as they say in the trade.

The auction house uses Royal Mail and Parcelforce services to deliver small items internationally. They offer furniture delivery within a 30 mile radius of their auction house for a fee from £35.00 plus VAT. Delivery within England, Wales, Scotland & Ireland, excluding Highlands & Islands, costs from £40.00 plus VAT.

To bid at our auctions you will need to register directly with us (in person, over the phone, or via email) or sign up online via the-saleroom.com or eastbristol.co.uk. Our buying fees direct are 19% of the hammer price, plus VAT on the commission (22.8% in total). If you bid online additional fees will apply and these are namely 4.95%+VAT (the-saleroom.com) and 3&+VAT (bid.eastbristol.co.uk). In all instances, buyers are asked to check the specific fees before bidding as occasionally an auction may have different commission rates set.

There are enjoyable aspects to take from all the menus – our favourites in terms of design & artwork are those dating from the 1930s and the 1950s. There’s a few in this book we’d love to add to our collection.

So we were sold even before opening a page, but if you are a newcomer to the subject, this book can be enjoyed as pure eye candy or will provide a fascinating insight into the history of a nation through its culinary culture.

Arne Jacobsen Cylinda Line stainless steel tea set designed for Stelton

It’s the start of a new year… so we’re starting a new alphabet blog series.

Arne Jacobsen vintage 1960s Cylinda-line tea set for Danish manufacturer, Stelton

We picked up this fabulous stainless steel tea set over the holiday period – so ‘A’ just had to be for ‘Arne’… Arne Jacobsen that is.

He’s one of the great designers of the 20th century – and is the man responsible for designing this set.

Arne Jacobsen vintage 1960s stainless steel Cylinda-line tea set designed for Danish manufacturer Stelton

It was manufactured by Stelton of Denmark in the 1960s.  The various pieces are unused in their boxes… and retain their original labels to the underside.

The Cylinda-line brochures (of which the set is part) were inside the pots.

The range comprises a variety of tablewares including tea & coffee sets, salt & pepper pots, toast racks, sauce boats, serving dishes, coasters, cocktail mixers, ice buckets etc.

In fact, we sold the Cylinda-line ice bucket on the website last year.

The collection is beautifully made, very functional and looks fantastic too!

It was awarded the id Prize in 1967 by the Danish Society of Industrial Design and the International Design Award 1968 by the American Institute of Interior Designers.

A really great find to start the new year!
