Price Points: Electric blankets

Selection of 3 king-size, dual-control electric blankets | H is for Home

I may shortly be leaving my 5th decade however, it wasn’t until recently that I’d ever heard of dual-control electric blankets – what a great invention!

I mentioned in the past that Justin & I have different preferences in pillow size, number and hardness. Well, we also differ in the temperature that we like the bed to be. I’m almost never warm enough – I could have an electric blanket switched on for the whole night during the winter. Justin throws the duvet off complaining of the heat.

One of these king-size, dual-control electric blankets will prevent much night time grumbling and tossing & turning!

  1. King-size electric heated under blanket fleece throw twin controls: £16.99, eBay
  2. Homefront electric blanket king-size dual control: £48.95, Amazon
  3. Dreamland heated fleece dual control fitted electric underblanket: £69.99, John Lewis

How to achieve a dreamy bedroom

How to achieve a dreamy bedroomcredit

The bedroom should be a place to retreat into, a place to forget the stresses and worries of the day. A space that you find cosy and relaxing by night time enabling you to drift off – and refreshing and positive as you wake. So, set the scene for a good night’s sleep by creating a dreamy bedroom.

Choose the right bed

Many of us keep the same old bed and mattress for many years beyond their best – quite surprising when you consider how much time we actually spend in bed over a lifetime – an average of a third by most estimates! Perhaps it’s time to consider a new mattress or complete change of look. Four-poster beds, sleigh beds and French provincial beds make climbing into bed feel so much more dreamy. Add fluffy pillows, soft blankets and throws so you can really snuggle in for the night.

Sheets, blankets or duvet?

Which ever of these options you prefer, choose something that’s made of pure linen, 100% wool or Egyptian cotton. The quality of materials and thread-count, well… count. You want bed linen that keeps you warm but doesn’t make you over-heat. Sleep is only satisfactory if you’re comfortable; not too hot, not too cold, but just right.

Light up the night

As you wind down and get ready for bed, the room lighting is very important. There’s nothing worse than a stark, bright overhead bulb in the bedroom. A directional bedside lamp might be required for reading, but also think about candlelight, flicker flame bulbs or fairy lights to create a relaxing mood and atmosphere. What about using one of those children’s night-lights that project stars or other shapes on the ceiling or walls?

Make it scent-sational

The wonderful aroma of flowers, scented candles, room diffusers or linen spray creates a real haven of relaxation and natural calm. Lavender, in particular, aids restful sleep; so look for products that incorporate this beautiful fragrance. You could make your own pillow mist which is easily done by combining a little lavender essential oil, witch hazel and water in a little pump-action bottle.

5 things we do in bed… it’s not just for sleeping!

Button & Sprung bed with floral upholstered headboard and base

Many people see their bedroom as a sacred shrine to sleep. You read articles advising insomniacs to remove unnecessary distractions such as computers and mobile phones from the room. Luckily, both of us rarely have trouble dropping off to sleep. It’s said that you spend a third of your life in bed – for us it could be getting on for up for a half! Here are some of the things we get up to in bed… no sniggering there at the back!

Working from home in bedcredit

Work

We both work primarily from home, and a lot of that time is actually working from bed. Working mornings begin before we even get out of bed; we’re on the iPad or laptop answering emails, browsing social media… and even blogging. They’re all jobs done from the comfort of bed. Speaking of comfort, upholstered beds & headboards give necessary support to your back. They can be beautiful as well as practical, we especially love the pretty floral patterned example from Button & Sprung in our main image. Get extra help from bolsters and cushions.

Read

If you enjoy reading in bed, you’ll need decent lighting. A wall-mounted reading light frees up limited bedside table space. The bulb should be bright enough so you don’t strain your eyes, but not so bright that you dazzle yourself. Get a lamp with an adjustable, directional arm so that you (and your page-turner) don’t disturb or keep the other person awake.

Breakfast and newspapers in bedcredit

Eat

We usually have coffee in bed first thing most days, but breakfast in bed, especially at the weekend – now that’s a real real treat. A tray laden with fresh coffee, croissants, fruit, bacon & egg… along with newspapers and the radio… bliss! Come to think of it, it’s been a while – Sunday it is.

Watch TV

We love watching films and gorging on box sets such as House of Cards and Scandi dramas. We have a large TV mounted on the wall opposite the bed in our upstairs den. It’s such a comfortable position to watch the screen from. The perfect place to switch off and relax in the evenings – wood-burner crackling, pillows plumped up, a snack or chocolate treat close to hand.

Store stuff

Your bed can take up a huge amount of the space in your bedroom. Make it a multi-functional, practical piece of furniture by having an ottoman or under-drawers. You can never have too much storage space! You’ll find a large selection of divan beds with drawers and king-size ottoman storage beds on the Button & Sprung website. Bedding, towels, out-of-season clothes, shoes or, in my case, the overspill of vintage handbags can all be stored out of the way until needed.

Between a vintage bed frame and a sleepy place: the Bruno Mattress

Blue-painted bedroomcredit

Every great picture starts with a great frame – and so should your mattress. Regardless of whose bedroom it is that we’re seeking to rejuvenate, we’ve always thought that the bed itself is the most important place to start (and why shouldn’t it be? If you’re anything like us, it’s where you’ll likely spend most of your time).

Below, we’ve compiled photos of our top 3 wish list bed frames that we want to use in future projects (are there any that we really shouldn’t have left out? Leave a comment below – we’d be interested to hear your opinions!):

For all that we love vintage bed frames, we’re strong believers in spending money on buying a good quality mattress to go with it. Sleep is important – and we’re quite sure that we seldom get enough of it. Life’s too short to suffer with back pain from a bad mattress, and that’s why a good mattress is one thing on which we just won’t compromise. A new mattress that we’ve found which just doesn’t compromise is the Bruno Mattress.

Bruno Mattress on a metal frame

In a world where everything seems to be evolving and we’re given more and more options, it’s refreshing to introduce a company which has sought to make life a little simpler. We’ve recently stumbled upon the Bruno Mattress, brought to you by a small Berlin-based start-up company founded by Felix Baer and Andreas Bauer. The mattress has recently been launched in the UK following great success in Germany and France, and we can’t wait to get our hands on it!

But why has the Bruno Mattress been received with such success?

Ultimate Comfort: After trialling and testing various materials and compositions with sleep experts, the founders at Bruno Sleep believe they’ve engineered the perfect mattress for all types of sleepers – regardless of body shape or sleeping position. That’s why Bruno comes in just one model comprised of a precision cut 7-zone support base, a 3cm 100% natural and organically farmed latex top layer and soft quilted cover top which can be easily removed for washing.

Quality Materials: Bruno Interior takes pride in sourcing sustainable materials that are of the highest quality. Each mattress is assembled by hand by a family-owned and operated fabric manufacturer in Saxony, Germany.

Bruno Matttress label

Peace of Mind: The Bruno Mattress is only available to buy online and is delivered to your door in a box! Bruno Interior uses a direct to customer business model – cutting unnecessary costs involved in traditional mattress selling (i.e. packaging, delivery lorries and middle men) – and are able to pass these savings of 30-40% direct to customers, which is reflected in the mattresses’ fair price. We’re so confident in our mattresses, we offer our buyers a 101 night trial period.

Getting a Bruno Mattress out of its box

Despite what you’ve been told (and what you have experienced as a buyer), don’t believe that you have to spend a huge sum of money on a mattress to get high quality. Just because a mattress is a necessity, that doesn’t mean you have to spend thousands of pounds. With Bruno, quality and comfort come at a fair price.

Price Points: King-size bolsters

Three king-size bolsters | H is for Home

I think I may have mentioned in the past that we both do a lot from bed. We write blogs, send emails, eat breakfast, watch television. So we spend much more than the average ⅓ of our lives in bed… that’s a lot of time!

Both the beds we use (we have one in our ‘den’ where we spend most evenings) are king size and both have an annoying habit. They each have a space between the mattress and the headboard through which, when we’re sitting up in bed, the pillows slide down. It’s a constant fight trying to tug the pillow back up through the gap.

I don’t know why we haven’t bought a couple of king-size bolsters – problem solved. They’d be much more comfortable and supportive than pillows when in an upright position anyway! I thought it would be a doddle finding them online. But no, most of the places you’d expect to find them – M&S, BHS, Debenhams, House of Fraser… none of them seem to sell them. I did however, manage to find three places that do have them in stock.

They’re all the same size, but it’s strange that the only one claiming to be orthopaedic is the cheapest – by at least 100%. Are the other two more expensive because you’re paying for ‘luxury’ or a brand name?

  1. RohiLinen orthopaedic king-size bolster: £7.97, Amazon
  2. Luxury 5 ft. bolster Bounce Back hollow fibre filled pillow – king: £16.99, Auravita
  3. Dorma Full Forever bolster pillow, £19.99, Dunelm
