We’re featuring some more vintage Scandinavian pottery goodness this week for Charity Vintage. North Devon Hospice has for up sale this set of 4 vintage Egersund onion bowls. They’re listed as ‘buy it now’ for £20 with an added £5.50 postage & packaging.

This pattern is quite rare – we’ve only ever had a couple of pieces over the years. We’re fairly sure the design is by Marianne Westman but if you know better, let us know!

*North Devon Hospice aims to be the centre of excellence for the provision of palliative care for the people of North Devon and to be the main point of contact for health care professionals requiring support with complex problems in palliative care.

Charity Vintage: Rörstrand Granada dish

small vintage Rorstrand Granada lidded dish for sale by Teesside Hospice Care Foundation on eBay for Charity (ends 16 Jul, 2014 19:06:07 BST)

If we didn’t already have this cute little Rörstrand Granada dish we’d be bidding on it ourselves to add to our vintage Scandinavian pottery collection! It’s being sold on eBay for Charity by Teesside Hospice Care Foundation.

The Granada pattern was designed by Marianne Westman for Rörstrand of Sweden in the 1950s. It’s a very popular pattern and can be found on all manner of pottery items including oven & tableware, tea services, butter dishes. She also designed other patterns for them including Picknick, Frisco, My Garden and the recently reissued Mon Amie.

*Teesside Hospice based in Linthorpe, Middlesbrough, was established in 1982 to enhance the lives of local people suffering from advanced cancer and other life limiting illnesses. They care for over 3,000 individuals in the Teesside region and all services are free of charge. Their annual running costs are £2.2million and they receive in the region of one third of these costs from the local NHS and must therefore raise approximately £4,600 each and every day of the year from their own resources.

Swedish ceramic production has been dominated by 3 firms – Gustavsberg, Upsala-Ekeby and the subject of today’s blog… Rorstrand.

Rorstrand is in fact, the 2nd oldest porcelain manufacturer in Europe, having been established in 1726. However, most of its early production was based on successful ranges developed by other factories.

The arrival of Alf Wallander as Art Director in 1895 was very significant. The factory began producing original, distinctive and innovative ceramics of its own.

Rorstrand has attracted some of the most talented artists & designers of the day. Names such as Edward Hald, Louise Adelberg, Carl-Harry Stalhane, Hertha Bengston, Gunnar Nylund, Marianne Westman, Inger Persson and Bertil Vallien.

The mid-twentieth output is our own personal favourite – with its simple stoneware designs & informal tableware ranges such as Picknick and Eden.

There have been various mergers & takeovers within Swedish ceramics – the ‘big three’ firms are today part of a single conglomerate – Designer Oy.

Rorstrand is still producing great ceramics – take a look at their current designers & ranges.

Of the recent output, we’re fond of the Grade tableware designed by Pia Torwell in 2000 – simple, functional & beautiful.
