Salvation Furniture table in our kitchen diner

Adelle recently entered an Instagram competition hosted by Notonthehighstreet. People were invited to post a #shelfie – an image of a shelf in their house. The prize was a Kanteen table from Salvation Furniture.

Lo & behold, our shelfie won!

The table is made from lime-washed, reclaimed wooden boards with a metal frame beneath. We like the character of the wood – and the rustic, vintage industrial look. It makes a great dining table and we were tempted to leave it in our kitchen diner, but we already have a nice baker’s table that acts as our food preparation & eating area. Fortunately, the table is also perfect as an office desk or craft station so it will put to good use upstairs.

Gail Kelly calendar

"Gail Kelly calendar" blog post banner

black & white cover of Gail Kelly's 2013 calendar featuring a linocut oak tree and acorns

Yes, it’s March, but we’ve only just got round to getting ourselves a 2013 calendar. We have high standards & requirements, you see, when it comes to choosing our annual calendar – it needs to be long & narrow as it has to fit the little strip of wall just inside the front door…

…it also needs to be attractive – no fluffy, cutesy pictures of animals much as we love them; no pop stars (Justin Bieber or Cliff Richard just won’t cut the mustard!); no artistic/moody/atmospheric shots of castles/ruins/seascapes/mountains; no humour (who wants to hear the same joke every day for a month?). We trawled Etsy, Folksy and Notonthehighstreet and eventually came across this Gail Kelly calendar.

We first fell in love with Gail’s linocut illustrations when we saw her at the British Craft Trade Fair in Harrogate about 5 years ago. We’ve been stocking her tree greeting cards at H is for Home ever since!

Sparrow In Birdhouse Key Holder: £12.50, Notonthehighstreet

The little wall-mounted hooks just inside our front door where we hang our keys went AWOL during the redecoration of our little porch area.

I don’t know about you, but if I’m at home, I need to keep my bunch of keys in EXACTLY the same place… AT ALL TIMES… or else cataclysmic chaos ensues prior to attempting to leave the house!

I thought this little fella would look great perched in our porch –  available in 4 colours – pink, black, yellow and green.

We already have one dog that guards the door. Fudge our Weimaraner is ever alert to everything – from potential intruders to the morning post – reacting with equal madness to both! But just in case he needs back-up, here’s his new partner.

It’s always good to receive items in the post that combine excellent packaging with that nice personal touch. Once released, he was ready for action. In addition to assisting Fudge in the security detail, his main duty will of course be to keep out those nasty winter draughts!

We found our new doggie draught excluder in Queenie by Margo Elder’s shop on Notonthehighstreet. He’s beautifully handmade from genuine Harris tweed and comes in a variety of colourways. Here he is pictured with a few of his friends.
