I was startled awake this morning by Justin crying out, “Oh no!”. I immediately thought it had something to do with the dog… or the shop… But no, I woke to the news that David Bowie had died.

I haven’t been as affected by a ‘celebrity’ death since the passing of the great John Peel. Bowie, like Elvis, is so iconic that a second name is surplus to requirements.

I’ve been listening to 6Music all day; Lauren Laverne, Mark & Stuart and Steve Lamaq have all been playing his music, old and new. The tributes and wonderful stories of him being a kind, funny, humble man have been pouring in. He’ll leave a huge void.

“I’m not a prophet or a stone aged man, just a mortal with potential of a superman. I’m living on.” David Bowie

In 10 days time, it’s Organise your Home Day; probably because it’s a time when many of us start to think about doing a spot of spring cleaning. Here in the Calderdale, many of us have been doing nothing but since Boxing Day.

Along with many other Northern areas, we were badly affected by flooding. This lovely valley and the string of settlements that we call home – Walsden, Todmorden, Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd, and Sowerby Bridge were all hit.

There’s currently an appeal online which Central Government has agreed to match pound for pound. Please donate if you can, whatever you can!

It’s the 21st of December today – the winter solstice or, if we’re being pedantic, it happens at exactly 4:48am tomorrow morning. I for one am looking forward to a little more light in my life!

It’s a day (or night) that has been celebrated for millennia by people around the world. From the druids at Stonehenge to the family gatherings for the Dongzhi Festival in China.

Many of the winter solstice customs are intertwined with those of Christmas. The pagan Scandinavian celebration of ‘Jul’ or Yule celebrates the god, Odin – who, with his long white beard, bears a striking resemblance to Father Christmas.

One of the real pleasures of Christmas is the foodstuffs that are once a year treats or distinctive to the season. Sometimes you pop them into your own festive shopping basket, and other times (even better) you’re given gifts that make your mouth water. Chocolates, cakes, relishes and the like… we’re getting excited! Here are a few favourite Christmas foodie gifts we found on Etsy.
