Property spotlight: Castle views

Caereinion Y Llech, Harlech LL46 2YL

In our last Property Spotlight post, we featured homes that look out on to cathedrals. This time, we’ve found a quartet of properties for sale spanning the home nations all boasting stunning views of the following castles:

  1. Alnwick, in England (where bits of the Harry Potter series, Philosopher’s Stone and The Chamber of Secrets were filmed)
  2. Harlech, in Wales (designated a World Heritage Site)
  3. Edinburgh in Scotland (the most besieged place in Britain)
  4. Ballyedmond, in Northern Ireland (the residence of Mary Haughey, Lady Ballyedmond The richest person in Northern Ireland)

Both my favourite property, and castle view, are in Harlech. I wouldn’t complain if someone told me that I’d have to move to Caereinion Y Llech tomorrow!

Also, I sort of cheated with the Northern Irish property that I chose. It doesn’t actually say that it has direct views of the (very close by) castle… but it does possess breathtaking, uninterrupted frontal views out towards the Irish Sea and the Mourne Mountains at the rear.

Property spotlight: Cathedral views

30 Goat Street, St Davids, Haverfordwest SA62 6RF

Cities are fascinating entities – at least they are here in Britain. Throughout history, cities have come about due to a number of different factors; population size, status granted by a ruling monarch or if the place has a diocesan cathedral – to name just three reasons.

This week, we’ve chosen ‘city’ properties enjoying cathedral views that are on the market, one from each of the four home nations:

  1. Wells, in England (a city since medieval times)

  3. Brechin in Scotland (no longer considered an ‘official’ city)

Once in a while, a property owner is looking to create a little money-spinner – a self-contained space that can be rented out on a long or short-term basis. Property spotlight: Round houses

The Round House, 135 Fivemile Straight, Maghera, Northern Ireland BT46 5JP

Why are so many properties plain old square or rectangular? Circles are so much more interesting. Perhaps it’s because they’re much easier to construct. Also, angular furniture – especially fixtures such as fitted kitchens – can look odd in a curved interior. Nevertheless, many adventurous architects and homebuilders take the plunge and design round houses.

I especially like the open atriums or courtyards that can often be found at the centre of round houses. They make for quiet, private oases; often incorporating trees, pond or pool and seating areas.

Here are three round houses that we discovered that are currently for sale – one in the North of England, one in the far South of England and the last one which is just outside the Sperrin Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Northern Ireland.
