Make your own soap

I was never very good at science subjects at school; I couldn’t get my head around physics and chemistry especially. I enjoyed doing the practical experiments – adding one substance to another to make a solution – it’s very much like baking. However, reading in a text book that combining H2O with NaOH causes a reaction that results in Na+ and OH- ions and lots of heat, was Greek to me.

Fast-forward 30-something years and I’ll now always remember that particular little nugget of chemistry. H2O (water) and NaOH (caustic soda) are essential ingredients in soap making.

Add them to vegetable oil with a dash of essential oil, whisk it all up… and magic happens!

Pour the resulting custard-like liquid into your mould or moulds, allow it to cool slowly for 24 hours and you get your lovely bars or block of soap.

The Christmas melt & pour soap making kit that we’re giving away contains moulds in the shapes of a Christmas tree, gingerbread person, reindeer, Santa Claus and an angel. As this kit doesn’t include caustic soda, it’s suitable for use by children with adult supervision.

I really enjoyed making my own soap for the very first time. Having the kit with all the ingredients pre-portioned meant that it was really easy and I was confident embarking upon the strange chemistry & alchemy! I now have the courage to buy all the ingredients in larger quantities and try out other oils and fragrances.

Some of the bars of vanilla soap I’ve made have now been wrapped up in tissue paper and tied with string ready to be stocking fillers for friends & family.

  2. I have showers in the morning as it is quicker and more convenient but I do love a nice pampering bubble bath if I get the chance x

  3. I love showering, but every now and then i will have a really nice bath, it helps to stop my muscles aching too much.

  4. I love a shower everyday, but at the end of the week a bath is brilliant to soothe away all the rest of the weeks stresses.

  5. depends what mood Im in. If I want to freshen up and be more awake I will have a shower…If I want to relax and snuggle I will have a bath

  6. Showers morning and night as we are on a water meter but I much prefer a bath, especially for those rare times I am on my own and can relax 🙂

  7. I prefer a bath but these days have to stick with just having a shower as my little girl who is 10 month seems to know when I run the bath and wakes up

  8. I love a long soak in the bath when I have time. When we refurbished our house, I bought the largest bath we could fit in the house bathroom, and had it set into a tiled frame, so there’s a ledge all the way around for a glass of wine and my book!

Unfortunately I don’t have time as often as I’d like, so more often than not it’s a quick shower!

  9. I have to use the shower as I have issues with my arm that prevent me lifting myself in and out of the bath xx

  10. I much prefer showers – baths just take too long. I get in, wash, get out and then get on with something else!

  11. Bath! And my flat currently only has a shower at the moment, I am going away soon and am so looking forward to a 2 hour soak 🙂

  12. I have a shower in the morning but my preference would be to have a long lingering bath most days to mentally prepare myself for the day!

  13. I prefer a shower – rarely have time to lounge around in the bath, and my water always goes cold. It is nice to have a long soak once in a while though.

  14. It has to be a bath . Its me time . Time for either complete mindless relaxation or time for thought . I love having baths in the late evening when the room can be dark .
