There’s nothing more beautiful than being pregnant and ready to take on the world with a new little life that you’re building from scratch. There are a lot of feelings involved and one of them is total discomfort. Pregnancy is a gorgeous time of life and your body feels lush and ripe, but it can also feel a lot like piles, back ache and ligament pains that just do not seem to go away. Being able to make yourself feel more comfortable is a must when you’re pregnant, and that means learning all about the ways to make yourself feel good.
You don’t have to be that person; in agony, in pain and unable to move around as much. You can learn to move your body to be more comfortable and support it as much as possible so that you can carry your pregnancy without feeling as if you’re falling to bits. There are enough changes that make the body hurt as it is, from the stretch marks and the swollen breasts to the sore gums and achy back. You want to make your pregnancy as comfortable as possible and we have ten tips to help you to do just that!
- Use the power of Epsom salts. Not everyone loves a bath, but Epsom salts baths are something else. Speak to your doctor about this first just in case there are any reasons you shouldn’t be sinking into a hot bath during your pregnancy. Speaking of which, you will have to watch the temperature. If you’re the kind of person who loves their bath to be hotter than the lava of the nearest volcano, you might have to lay off on it for a while so you don’t exceed the temperature too much when you’re enjoying a soak.
- Heat pads. Heating pads are an expert option for your back or your hips when you’re carrying a baby. The strain on the body creates a lot of pain, so you need to do all that you can to alleviate it. Heat pads are perfect after a long day of being on your feet, and you can buy the ones that you heat in the microwave and then rest on your body, or you can buy the sticky ones and click and stick them to your body. Heat is great for sore muscles and achy joints.
- All the antacids! It’s not just the physical joints that hurt while you’re carrying a baby, but the pain of acid reflux can really be difficult to bear while you’re trying to get on with your day to day. Equipping yourself with antacids is a good way to make sure that you are comfortable at all times. Keep some at work and some in the car as well as some at home. They’re the best defense against reflux pain and if it doesn’t work, talk to your doctor so that you can get something stronger!
- Comfortable clothing. It may be tempting just to go up a couple of sizes when you are buying clothing while you’re pregnant, but you should succumb to the maternity wear you find online. You want loose fits and stretchy waistbands to be comfortable. You don’t need baggy sweats, but you can wear leggings and dresses that look stunning on your pregnant body. Don’t forget to invest in good sandals and slip on shoes, too, because you need to think about not having to bend down to lace up your trainers.
- Magnesium. One of the most important ways that you can remain comfortable is with magnesium. Every pregnant woman experiences cramps, but the Charley Horse cramps in the calves at night are the worst to experience! Magnesium (and a bowl of bananas) can really help you out here!
- Sleep. One of the most important things that you can do to be comfortable in pregnancy is to sleep. You can buy a bed with a memory foam mattress topper, or you can buy a bed that can be controlled with a remote for the headrest and the feet to keep you comfortable as necessary. Tossing and turning isn’t fun to do when you have a giant bump in front of you. You can buy a whole new bed with firmer support, but if you can’t replace the bed, don’t worry! You just need to make sure that the bed that you do have is as comfortable as possible.
- New pyjamas. You need to be comfortable in bed while you sleep and one of the best things to do is invest in new pyjamas. If you can’t manage getting shorts or trousers up and down with many, many toilet trips in the night, then the best thing that you can do is to invest in nightdresses. You can buy some longer, flowing night dresses or you can buy them to be fairly short, much like long shirts. Just make sure that you choose thin cotton materials and pair them with night time bras to capture any milk leaks. Soft pyjamas are the best thing to buy!
- Pregnancy pillows. The best tips for choosing the right pregnancy pillow matter before you go for it. A pregnancy pillow (or six) will help you to feel very comfortable when you’re relaxing lying down or sleeping. You can bet that you can find pillows to go behind your back, between your knees to balance your hips and even under your bump while you sleep on your side so that you can support your belly and frame. Pillows are nice but specific pregnancy pillows are going to really be a game-changer. Long pillows that are curved in a way to support your body will help you to feel comfortable and ready to sleep.
- Coconut oil. One of the biggest discomforts in pregnancy isn’t just about your new bump size, but the impact on your skin as your body changes. Your skin stretches to accommodate your softening hips, growing stomach and swollen breasts. Coconut oil massaged into your skin is going to help you to stop your skin from drying up and splitting as it stretches. You’ll be able to enjoy the moisturising effects of the coconut oil and it can help you to stop your skin looking flaky and dry. One of the other benefits of coconut oil is that it smells so good! You’ll be able to catch a whiff of yourself on and off, and that will make you associate the scent of coconut oil with pregnancy for the rest of your life!
- Evening primrose oil. Another oil off the block is evening primrose oil. Evening primrose oil may help you to strengthen your uterus in preparation for labour, and so it can help you to feel more comfortable and as if you are preparing for something (which you are!).
Before you take any medicines or try any salt baths, make sure that to speak to your doctor. They’ll be the right person to tell you whether you’d be making the right choices with your health while you’re pregnant. Pregnancy is a difficult thing for the body to go through, and if you can make moves to ensure that you are much more comfortable, then you should. You have labour to contend with later on and you should be allowed to stay feeling good until that time. Preparing your pregnancy body for labour is your next step, but before you get that far you should think about how you’re going to feel good in the meantime.
