We thought that this home bar was a very sweet idea. This year’s Covid crisis, and its associated social lockdowns, has meant restricted opening hours for pubs, bars and clubs… and often no opening hours at all.

So, if you’ve fancied a drink or two, there’s often been no alternative to having them at home. ‘The Staying Inn’ adds a little bit of fun to the experience. It also serves as the perfect backdrop for those online get-togethers on Zoom and FaceTime. You could even go on a virtual pub crawl if your friends install similar bars. Get thinking of some equally good names!

Vacuum can coolers

With the recent run of hot, sunny days, we’ve been going walking and making trips to the beach. Before we set off, we pack up the car with what we’ll need for a day out; folding garden chairs and a couple of rucksacks. The rucksacks will hold things like a magazine or newspaper, sandwiches, fruit, biscuits and a hot drink in a flask.

After a long hike on a hot day, you don’t always fancy a hot drink. I love a cold can of refreshing ginger beer. Currently, if we want to bring a couple of tins with us, the contents will be warm by the time we get to our final destination. One solution would be to bring a cooler – but they’re big, bulky and heavy… and we sometimes walk for miles. The remedy? A pair of vacuum can coolers. Not the Neoprene ones that would let the cold escape from the top, but metal ones that are completely enclosed.

On this blog, we try to find products that are shipped from within the UK, but we couldn’t find many vacuum can coolers from local sellers. The ones we’ve chosen below are affordable – but watch out for P&P charges on top.

  1. YETI Rambler Colster original 16oz tall can adapter/extender and aluminium bottle: £12.28, Etsy
  2. Newdora can cooler, 3-in-1 stainless steel insulated vacuum cold cooler, white: £21.78, eBay
  3. BrüMate HOPSULATOR TRíO 3-in-1 stainless steel insulated can cooler, matte grey: £26.02, Amazon

Selection of wine racks

If you’re anything like us, wine doesn’t last long enough in the house to warrant a wine rack! Besides, we’ve previously always lived very close to shops – and usually only bought a bottle or two as and when we’re going to drink it. Perhaps with our new, more rural location, this item might become more essential for us.

However, what I do use wine racks for is my annual summer batch of elderflower cordial. Each late May/early June, I pick the wild, fragrant blooms to make cordial and occasionally champagne. So long as the cordial contains added citric acid and is stored in properly sterilised bottles, it will last until the following summer, when production happens all over again.

These are 3 of my favourite wine racks; I like each for different reasons. Starting with the IKEA model – it’s really cheap, yet is made of solid wood, so can be stained or painted to match your décor. In addition, it’s stackable, so it can be built to suit your space and/or bottle collection.

Number 2 is unobtrusive and minimalist; it’s made of thin black wire with hexagonal slots (a shape that gives a structure maximum strength in minimum space – think honeycomb). It gives the appearance of the bottles hovering in mid-air.

The final example has been designed to resemble a wooden wine box and can hold more bottles than the previous two.  If this is your favourite of the trio, it would be a match made in heaven if your name also happens to be Chloé!

  1. HUTTEN 9-bottle wine rack, solid wood: £8.00, IKEA
  2. Black metal bottle rack: £33.00, Maison du Monde
  3. Vinothek 12-bottle wine rack: £39.99, Wayfair

How to better enjoy wine at home

How to better enjoy wine at home | H is for Home

Enjoying a delicious bottle of wine at home is one of life’s true pleasures. When you order a bottle in a restaurant, sometimes the mark-up on the cost price is scandalous. It’s fair to say that much of a restaurant’s profits comes from the alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages rather than the food; this may come as a surprise to many people. This isn’t the case when buying privately for home consumption though.

Here are a few quick suggestions about enjoying wine in the comfort of your own home.

Six people drinking red and white wine

Personal wine fridge

Having your own dedicated wine fridge (or wine cooler to use the American vernacular) brings a level of decadence and sophistication to your love of wine. No longer is it a problem to find a place to store more than just a few bottles without taking up half the fridge in the process or needing a separate cold storage area under the stairs, for instance. Using a private cellar to store wine is essential if you have vintage bottles of Château Lafite Rothschild that collectors fawn over. Alternatively, you can invest in your own wine cooler.

The wine fridges from wineandbarrels.co.uk come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are popular amongst many wine lovers. The tall and slender design is the most popular though, so it’s best to find a good position at home that has access to mains power and will fit a new fridge. The fridges from WineandBarrels offer one or two zones that have two separate temperatures for wines with different ambient tolerances. Dehumidifiers in some fridges protect the wine from any damaging humidity too. The back-lighting looks attractive on many models and reading the wine labels is easier with lighting.

Pouring red wine into a glass

Unrushed and nothing important left to do

It’s best to have an unhurried environment when cracking open a savoured bottle that you’ve been waiting to enjoy. A good wine is not something you should be sipping on when you know you have to get something completed right after because your mind will be consumed with other things. Enjoyment of each sip of matured wine is best done while unburdened. It can also help to unwind after a long day.

It’s also sensible to avoid getting behind a wheel after drinking. Wine contains a substantial percentage of alcohol – far more than the average beer – which sometimes catches unsuspecting wine lovers unaware.

Matching wine perfectly with every meal

When entertaining guests or just alone with your thoughts, consider matching your bottle of wine perfectly for each meal. If you’re not sure how to choose the right wine for each meal, then this article from the Wine Spectator is going to be extremely helpful to you.

What’s key is finding a balance between how acidic or sweet the chosen wine is and how it enhances the prepared meal. Complementary flavours will add interest to the taste of the meal.

Enjoying wine at home is much better value than ordering expensive bottles at a pricey restaurant. When you choose well and take the time to sample good vintages, it’ll provide much more pleasure with every glass.
