Price Points: Swedish torch logs

Swedish torch logs

Swedish torch logs, sometimes known as Swedish candles or tree torches, are wooden logs that are burned and used for heat and light outdoors.

Depending on what you want to do with it – cook or keep warm – determines the type of wood you should use. For cooking, go with hardwood such as apple, ash, beech, cherry or oak. Resinous woods such as fir, pine and spruce are best for producing heat.

When it comes to price, it appears that it’s length that matters; expect to pay about 30-35p per centimetre. The 1-metre option has a burn time of up to 6 hours, so it’s ideal if you’re planning on hosting a garden party that will go on well into the night.

Of course, you could always make your own. Get yourself a log – not too dry, not too wet, chainsaw a deep ‘x’ through it vertically, stuff a firelighter into the resulting crevice…

…or perhaps simply get one of the examples below that we found online!

Love Logs is our kind of indie brand. Heather & Paul launched their company only last summer, in the hope of making a difference in the firewood industry. Like us, they’re concerned about the proliferation of single use plastic in the trade. Also of concern, is the 1,500+ ‘wood miles’ much of the UK’s firewood travels to get here from Eastern Europe… that was news to us!

To be in with a shout at winning this outdoor cooking kit, just comment below telling us what is your favourite barbecue food.

Price Points: Eco-friendly firewood

3 examples of eco-friendly firewood

Air quality, particularly in urban areas, has been much in the news recently. Often vehicle exhausts are cited as the main problem, however, it was the turn of domestic wood-burning stoves to be highlighted in the news reports we saw last week.

It appears that there are plans to phase out everything except the most efficient burners from sale over the next few years… and the fuel they consume was also a point of concern. Here are three examples of eco-friendly firewood, each with their own plus points to recommend.

  1. Solid fuel coffee logs, 8kg, (16 logs): £7.98, B&Q
These logs are made from used, recycled coffee. They’re a carbon-neutral winter fuel, have a natural aroma, each log burns for 1 hour, and they burn at a higher temperature than wood.
  2. 12-pack Premium eco wooden heat logs: £13.99, Amazon
Less than 5% moisture content (traditional kiln-dried firewood or seasoned firewood contains around 20%). It’s suitable for log fires, coal fires, open stoves, fire pits etc. They’re environmentally friendly, consist of wood from managed forests & recycled wood that’s been cleverly compressed into handy logs. The manufacturing process means they retain their shape during burning and don’t expand (reducing dangerous sparking and spitting). They’re convenient to use, easy to light and provide a high, steady heat with low smoke and ash.
  3. Lekto night briquettes, 20kg, (20 briquettes): £24.95
Less than 9% moisture content. Each environmentally-friendly briquette burns for an impressive 8 hours – perfect for keeping your fire alive overnight. It’s sourced from well-managed, sustainable forests without any added chemicals. They’re made from conifer tree bark that’s been compressed, and work well when used in conjunction with traditional firewood. The small, compact size makes them easy to store.

How to choose the perfect fire for your Connecticut home

'How to choose the perfect fireplace for your Connecticut home' blog post banner

Traditional Connecticut salt housecredit

A good fire should do much more than simply provide warmth for you and your family. It can bring a room to life with its cosy glow or flickering flames. It instantly adds a unique character to the space in which it sits. When choosing the best fire to install in your Connecticut home, it’s important to be aware of all the various options. We’ve put together a list of the different types of fires available in order to help you choose.

Gas fires

If you’re thinking of saving money on your energy bills, gas fireplaces can be excellent choice. You can warm the room you’re sitting in without having to heat the whole house. Gas fireplaces need ventilation, but don’t require a masonry built chimney, so if your property in Connecticut doesn’t have a chimney this may be the best option to go for. There are many different sizes and styles to choose from, and gas fires tend to have the best energy efficiency ratings.

Electric fires

One of the most convenient factors of an electric fire is that they come ready assembled and simply need plugging in and switching on. They’re very flexible in terms of positioning within the home and because the manufacturer has already selected materials and dimensions, there’s one less thing to worry about. However, if your home in Connecticut is quite large, an electric fire may not be the best option as they only tend to work well in smaller rooms, meaning that using one in a large space usually results in unsatisfactory results and energy inefficiency.

Wood fires & stoves

Open fireplaces & wood-burning stoves are traditional and have been used for many years. As well as saving hundreds of dollars on your energy bill, they’re particularly good for adding some character and authenticity to your Connecticut home. You’ll need firewood of course. You could chop your own if you have suitable resources – or firewood can be bought from suppliers and delivered to your door for ease and convenience.

Themes & styles

When selecting a fire for your Connecticut home, you’ll find that no matter what type you go for, there are a vast array of different styles available – materials too of course. Brick, stone, tile, marble and wood are just some of the different choices available. Select a combination that suits the feel & décor of the room. Many people want a fire that will last a lifetime or many years at least. Therefore, it’s not unusual for homeowners to select a fireplace that has a neutral theme in order to keep it in line with any interior decoration changes or adjustments that may be made in the future. Mantles are also an excellent addition that can add to the character and styling of the room.

Do you live in Connecticut? What kind of fireplace do you have, and why did you make that choice? We’d love to hear from you in the comments.
