Left-handed ice cream scoops

It’s not easy being a left-hander and keen cook. There’s a long list of kitchen tools, gadgets and utensils that aren’t designed for us; scissors, knives, peelers, corkscrews, can openers, whisks, cooking spoons and spatulas. Not to mention lipped saucepans, mixing bowls and ladles – the list goes on and on!

When I searched the internet with a fine tooth comb looking for left-handed ice cream scoops, I only found one… one company – Stöckel – that makes them! Considering 10% of the world’s population are southpaws, other manufacturers are missing out on a lot of potential custom!

The other two will work well enough for both left and right handers. However, a scoop with a lever and ‘scooper’ (the narrow, semi-circular piece of metal inside the scoop that swivels) does a better job.

Choice of three Bullet journals | H is for Home

When I was a pre-teen, I used to collect stickers, pretty writing paper, pens & pencils, erasers (especially the sweet-smelly ones!) and anything stationery-related.

In my teens, I flirted with keeping a diary – but with two, very nosey younger sisters, that was always going to end in disaster!

As a young adult / twenty-something, I was a Filofax fanatic. I had all the inserts & accessories and my day-to-day life couldn’t run properly without it. This was an era long before the internet and smart-phones with calendars, alarms and alerts were even invented.

Thus, I’m the perfect candidate for keeping a bullet journal (or ‘BuJo’ to the initiated). I realise that I’m a few years behind the times – it was first shared back in 2013 – but better late than never! I’ve been reading up about them and there are lots & lots of inspirational bullet journalers out there. These are a few I’ve found:

The only obstacle is the fact that I’m a left-hander; fellow lefties will know just what I’m on about. Trying to write in notebooks, diaries… even cheque books (remember those?!) etc is a challenge. Trying not to smudge the ink you’ve just written takes a lot of effort! There are, however, special journals for left-handers and ones that open flat.

I think a bullet journal is just the thing to get my life in order in 2019!

For the list-makers, the note-takers, the Post-It pilots, the track-keepers, and the dabbling doodlers. It’s an analogue system for the digital age that will help you track the past, organise the present, and plan for the future

Let’s hear it for lefties!

'Let's hear it for lefties!' Etsy List curated by H is for Home

It’s Left-Handers Day soon, let’s hear it for lefties! We’re the forgotten minority. You right-handed folks don’t know how easy you have it! If you look up left-handed in the dictionary, you find terms such as ‘awkward’, ‘clumsy’, ‘gauche’, ‘sinister’, ‘insincere’, ‘maladroit’. Now, is that really fair?

There are so many things right-handers take for granted – learning to knit & crochet; learning to play the guitar, piano – even trumpet; playing sports such as golf or hockey; using a pair of scissors, knife, egg beater or tin opener. I could go on & on…

Left-handers are meant to be more artistic, creative and intelligent. Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo – both lefties. Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe – both lefties. Albert Einstein and Aristotle, yeah, you guessed it, both lefties.

Let’s hear it for lefties!

Tuesday Huesday: El Zurdo

Happy Left-Handers Day! Adelle is left-handed (along with about 10% of the world population). To celebrate we’re featuring a vintage Spanish film poster for El Zurdo (meaning southpaw). Starring Paul Newman, the original English title is The Left Handed Gun. It refers to the (disputed) fact that the infamous outlaw, Billy the Kid was left-handed.
