Price Points: Bedside lamps

Bedside lamps

We’re still using the same pair of vintage 1960s/70 brown goose neck bedside lamps that we had in our previous house. They don’t really suit the country cottage décor of our current place.

We have a general idea about what we want but, for whatever reason, haven’t managed to find just the right ones. They’ll need to be neutral in colour; either brown, grey or sage green. I don’t want them to be girly… but I don’t want them to look masculine either. Our bedside tables are quite compact, so the lamps, too, will have to be small scale. We read, write and work in bed, therefore we’d want them to have flexible, hinged arms and shades where you can direct the beam of light depending on what we’re doing. Finally, and just as important as all the other previous points, they need to be good-looking!

So… perhaps you can see why it’s taken so long to hit on just the right ones!

Vintage miniature Lixo rubbish bin

Even though 2021 seems to be flying by, we’ve somehow found the time to update our web shop three times this month! With everything slowly opening up here in Wales and over in England, we’ve been heading out on buying trips to both old haunts and new territories.

Here’s a small selection of the freshly-picked vintage items that we’ve listed online this week. Click on each image to be taken to the individual product page.

Charity Vintage: Space age lamp

vintage space age lamp for sale on eBay for Charity by Isabel Hospice (ends 30 Oct, 2014 08:55:16 GMT)

This vintage space age lamp is one of our favourite items that we’ve featured to date on Charity Vintage.

It looks very much like the Lumitron light designed by Robert Welch. It’s currently for sale on eBay for Charity by Isabel Hospice* whose items we’ve featured a fair few times here. It’s a ‘buy it now’ item priced at £100. It’s not cheap, but there are currently 25 people who have saved it to their watched items.

*Isabel Hospice is a charity needing to raise nearly £4 million per annum to provide their free services to the people of eastern Hertfordshire. Their ethos is that they treat the whole person, not simply the illness. They offer a complete hospice service through their team of Community Nurse Specialists, a 16-bed, in-patient hospice, a day hospice, outreach day hospices, hospice at home and a family support and bereavement service.

Put in the shade!

collection of vintage lamps including a pair of olive green Poole Pottery cubes, one tall, teak Danish example and a lime green glass pear shaped base

We’ve bought lots of lamp bases recently and have been trying to marry them up with shades that we also pick up from time to time.

large white vintage geometric table lamp base topped with a vintage Genia Sapper "Heidi" fabric shade

We think this combination really works. We bought this original 1960s/70s white pottery base at a market last week. We already had the Genia Sapper Heidi pattern shade… and hey presto, a match made in heaven!

diptych image of vintage Danish teak lamp base with two different shades

We had a couple of options available for this vintage Scandinavian teak base. Both have natural tones in hessian type materials. Each works fine… but we’re not sure that either is the perfect shape & size.

The actual base is stunning though, with its tactile sculptural form – very Dansk Designs actually.

pair of small, olive green, cube-shaped vintage Poole Pottery lamp bases with geometric pattern decoration

We’ve just acquired two of these geometric pottery bases. They were produced by Poole Pottery in the 1960s.

The bases are the stars of the show here, so we’ll keep it simple for the shades. We’ve got some of those cylindrical off-white fibreglass shades, which are a pretty good fit… but a slate grey fabric would be perfect.

…and then there’s this stunning lime green glass shade – possibly by Holmgaard. This base is quite tricky – we’re not even sure what we’re looking for – but it will jump out at us one day!!!
