Designer Desire: IRA Denmark

Montage of IRA Denmark metalware designs

Colourful vintage metalware is always a big seller on the H is for Home shop website. Worcesterware and Laurids Lønborg are the two main makers; however, IRA Denmark items are also very sought after.

IRA Denmark is the name of the company which was based in Copenhagen. Four of the main designers were Anita Wangel, Ethel von Horn, Arne Bentsen and Kamma Svensson. I can’t find out much about any of these individuals; there was a 2013 article in Scandinavian Retro magazine (shown at the top of the montage above), but my Swedish language knowledge is practically non-existent!

The only information that I have is that Ethel von Horn was Swedish, Arne Bentsen was Danish and Anita Wangel was Finnish. The eye-catching tins, coasters, bread bins etc were retailed through department stores and mail order across Scandinavia.

Find examples of IRA Denmark metalware on eBay and Etsy.

Charity Vintage: Lord Nelson sugar jars

'Charity Vintage' blog post banner

complete set of large Lord Nelson sugar jars for sale on eBay for Charity by Dove House Hospice(ends 12 May, 2015 20:04:40 BST)

Dove House Hospice* is currently selling this complete set of large vintage Lord Nelson sugar jars. It took us AGES to complete the set we own; picking them up one by one, as and when we came across them. Here’s a ready made set!

They’ve already had a couple of bids but they’re still currently only £16 + £7.70 postage. They are described as being in ‘good’ condition.  There’s no damage and all their seals are intact. I’d say that would mean they’re in excellent condition – all they need is a wash in soapy water!

If anyone has one of the smaller, matching sugar shakers/dredgers for sale, let me know. I won’t consider our set to be truly ‘complete’ until we have both the caster sugar and the icing sugar shaker in our possession! 🙂

*Dove House Hospice offers specialist palliative care to adults with life limiting illnesses, palliative care is the total care of a patient whose disease is no longer able to be cured. There is no charge for their services & they rely on funds raised in the community.
