Auction alert: Montpelier Interiors: Decorative by Design

A SET OF TEN FRENCH BLUE GLASS CHEMIST'S JARS

The Montpelier Interiors: Decorative by Design sale is organised by Curated Auctions who is based in South East London. The auction of 256 lots is being held on Wednesday 6th April 2022 from 2pm.

We chose to feature this auction because of the number of interesting and quirky decorative items that are coming up for sale. For instance, a coco de mer nut, collections of antique cast iron crucifixes and, my favourite item, an entire walk-in larder. I wish I had the space – and the funds – to house it!

All lots are subject to a 25% buyer’s premium on the final hammer price, plus VAT. Live bidding via the Curated Auctions website incurs an additional fee of 1% or through the-saleroom.com, invaluable.com or liveauctioneers.com (where a 5% surcharge applies).

The auction house itself doesn’t provide a packaging or delivery service, although they recommend a local art shipping specialist company.

A LARGE COCO DE MER NUT (LODOICEA MALDIVICA) WITH KERNELS

Lot 22: A LARGE COCO DE MER NUT (LODOICEA MALDIVICA) WITH KERNELS
There is a long historical tradition of collecting Coco de Mer nuts and treasuring them as rare and unusual objects, as far back as the 16th century they were decorated with jewels and placed in ‘cabinets of curiosities’. Their obvious resemblance to a woman’s buttocks inspired their botanical name “Lodoicea Callipyge”; “callipyge” meaning “beautiful rump” in Greek. Sailors would see them floating in the sea and supposedly mistook them for real women, others believed they grew on trees deep in the ocean and floated to the surface when ripe.

Auction alert: Watsons Auctioneers Antique & Collectables auction

Royal Doulton Kaleidoscope TC1082 dinnerware

The Watsons Auctioneers‘ Antique & Collectables auction takes place on Thursday 24th February 2022, from 10am.

Back when we lived in Brighton, only about 25 miles from this auction in Heathfield, we used to attend on sale day. It was a regular haunt of my parents, who owned an antique shop. For us, Watsons was always a treasure trove and there were also indoor and outdoor stalls on site selling a variety of antiques, collectables, architectural salvage and bric-a-brac.

I’ve done a bit of research into some of the lots that we’re featuring in this post. The auctioneers estimate the Pukeberg glass lamp base at between £50 and £80; I’ve found similar examples for sale online around the mid-hundreds of pounds mark.

The Midwinter Zambesi pattern is highly collectable; a (damaged) teapot on its own recently sold for £50. Most surprising to me, is the Garrard turntable; I thought the thousand pound estimate was a bit keen – but no, that’s about what they’re worth!

Auction Alert: Ushers New Year’s sale

Fry's Milk Chocolate advert

This week’s selection taken from Ushers New Year’s sale is probably the most eclectic array of items we’ve ever featured on an Auction Alert post. The auction takes place in Kells, Co. Meath, Ireland on 31st January 2022 from 11am.

Included in the sale are house clearances from Sandymount, Boyne Road Navan & Garden Effects from Kilpatrick House Ardee. Individual lots can be seen on their EasyLiveAuction page and, in addition, there are lots of group photographs to see on their WordPress website.

Ushers give no estimates, no descriptions, no condition reports and no dimensions are supplied. There’s merely an item title for each lot. We’ve found that where there’s a lack of measurements, a good idea is to look for the lot number in the photograph. You can roughly judge the size of an item from the lot number’s sticky label.

The fact that the sale is in Ireland won’t suit most of our readers. However, Ushers state simply, “Delivery, shipping and packing can be arranged”.

Auction Alert: Fine Auction

Pair of gilt metal palm trees

This week’s featured Auction Alert is Lots Road Auctions‘ – Fine Auction. They’re based in the upmarket borough of Chelsea in London. The sale takes place on 3rd January 2022 from 11am.

Lots Road may be familiar to many, there’s been a really insightful television series, “The Auction House” (2 series so far, in fact) about the organisation that follows the whole selling process. You’ll find the very first episode, in its entirety, at the the bottom of this post.

There’s a total of 600 lots in the sale, including modern fine art, tribal art, furniture, lighting and china. The estimates given seem pretty steep; perhaps that’s due to the fact that it’s central London prices. However, you can walk away with an original (print) Picasso, Matisse, Antony Gormley or Alexander Calder or  for less than a grand!

There’s an added 3% + VAT (3.6% including VAT) surcharge added on all successful autobids & live bids through their website. You can also bid via the easylive auction website, and either pay a flat fee of £3.00 or 3% of the final hammer price.

Here’s their ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ video whirl through all the lots up for grabs on the 3rd. Beneath that, is the dozen or so that we’ve selected to feature.
