Justin bought me a pair of knives and some secateurs for Christmas this year. The secateurs are special as they’re designed for left-handers. Trying them out for the first time, I didn’t realise how odd it has felt pruning in the garden all these years.

Price Points: Plug in heaters

What with the rising costs of everything and the recent cold snap we experienced, we’re all looking at ways of heating our homes a little more cheaply.

Instead of turning on the central heating and upping the temperature of the entire house, one of these little plug in heaters will warm up only the room in which you’re spending most of your time. That could be your home office during the working day, the lounge in the evening or your bedroom just prior to you getting out of bed in the morning.

If you have one or plan to get one, just remember a couple of safety things. When plugged in and turned on, don’t place bulky items of furniture (such as sofas) directly in front of it. It will block the heat from radiating. Do not leave it unattended for long periods; don’t go out and leave it on and working.

The higher the wattage, the more heat it will kick out, so pay particular attention to that detail. The 500 watt example is recommended for heating a room of about 9m²; the 900w plug in heater can be effective in a room up to 20m².

I actually really like the naffness of the ‘real fire’ effect of the cheapest example!

Price Points: Dutch ovens

For the longest while I have wanted a decent sized Dutch oven; or as they’re called in Trinidad, a coal pot and in Jamaica, a Dutch pot ot ‘Dutchie’.

Using one of these Dutch ovens, you can grill, bake, barbecue, fry and even turn out a great sourdough loaf. It’s probably the most versatile pot in the kitchen – and works equally well when cooking outdoors.

Of the three Dutch ovens, I’d have to choose the traditional Caribbean version. You get the three parts; the bottom ‘oven’ that holds the charcoal, the cooking pot and the lid. I’d add a circular grill so that I could use the oven as a barbecue and also perhaps use it with my cast iron Welsh griddle stone too.

Price Points: Plantable calendars

It’s coming up to the time of year where people are beginning to think about post-Christmas and planning for 2023. I mostly do this with the help of virtual, online calendars that sync between my smart phone and laptop. However, I’ve always liked the idea of embarking upon the new year with a fresh A3 diary or bullet journal.

One of these plantable calendars would make the perfect Christmas present for an eco-conscious or gardening friend or family member. At the end of the year, rather than filing it away or putting it into the paper recycling, the pages can be planted up in the garden or into pots where they transform into wild flowers, salad or vegetables.
