What is it that makes a Christmas-time home feel warm and welcoming? Often, it’s the lighting; twinkly fairy lights, flickering candles and a crackling flames in the fireplace. This illuminated Christmas lounge tick all those boxes.

Emma’s Northern Ireland home is cosy and inviting; full of colour, fun and an ever-rotating collection of lovely, colourful wall art. Check out the rest of her beautiful home on Instagram.

I saw a pampas grass Christmas tree on Instagram and thought, “What a great idea!”. It could be a simple yet stunning DIY project for next year. It would take about a hundred or so ‘blades’ of pampas grass, cut into different lengths to create a fir tree shape. I can’t see what the ‘trunk’ is made of, perhaps a broomstick with holes drilled into it.

It’s a very eco-conscious option for a Christmas tree; grass is biodegradable, compostable, recyclable, reusable and renewable… all the REs! Decorate it with equally natural ‘baubles’ like foraged pine cones, holly, ivy or pheasant feathers.

Decorate the rest of the room similarly; with natural materials such as wicker, wood, wool and cotton and keep the colour palette neutral.

I’m obviously not the only one that thinks the pampas grass Christmas tree is going to become increasingly in vogue – scroll to the bottom of this post to see a recent article in the Metro newspaper.

Christmas wreath making

Christmas wreath made by Justin | H is for Home

This is the first year that I can remember us not having a tree up for Christmas. All the rooms in our cottage are in various states of unfinishedness (I think I just made that word up!). We wanted some sort of festiveness, so decided to adorn the finished front doors. Yes, as our house was formerly two tiny cottages, we have two front doors. Rather than buy them, we downed decorating tools and picked up Christmas wreath making ones instead.

Foraged foliage and other Christmas wreath making items | H is for Home

Our village is surrounded by mixed coniferous forest, so we didn’t need to venture far to forage for Christmas wreath raw materials. And, thanks to lots of very windy weather recently, it didn’t take us long to find lots of different kinds of fir, larch, spruce and pine fronds on the ground. Saying that, holly with its berries still intact was pretty scarce; I think the local and winter-visiting birds have been feasting on them.

I found it harder to do than I thought it would; Justin’s attempt was far superior in my opinion. He has a natural talent for flower & foliage arranging!

I tried to improve mine by embellishing it with a big, gold ribbon. What do you think?

Now that we have a pair of wire wreath frames, I think we’ll be making them every year – practice makes perfect!

Price Points: Real Christmas wreaths

Real Christmas wreaths | H is for Home

What better way to welcome visitors to your home this festive season than with a real Christmas wreath hanging from your front door?

A real wreath has the lovely smell of fresh pine needles and other greenery. I love the idea of being sent all the components for making your own. It also means that you can reuse most of the materials for years to come – just go out foraging for holly, ivy, mistletoe, fir tree fronds and similar.

Don’t leave it to the last minute, though – many of the real Christmas wreaths that we looked at online were already sold out!
