A choice of 3 feathered homewares

Feathers are used extensively in household goods; pillows, cushions, quilts, duvets, mattress toppers and the like. However, other than feather dusters, I don’t think they’re used anywhere near enough on the exterior of items. They’re beautiful, colourful, soft, tactile and all natural. Here are three lovely examples of feathered homewares in use in different situations.

  1. Feather & velvet cushion – grey: £19.00, Time & Tide
  2. 3 natural Juju hats: £247.55, Etsy
  3. Glorious Gloria white feather pendant: £565.00, The French Bedroom Company

5 ways to say bye-bye to beige and make your home unique

5 ways to say bye-bye to beige and make your home unique

Do you ever find yourself feeling bored and uninspired with identikit interiors straight out of the Ikea catalogue? Sometimes it can feel like you could go into any home, anywhere in the world and spot that same HEMNES chest of drawers! We all want homes which reflect our individual personalities and tastes, but if you don’t have the budget to commission custom soft furnishings and hand painted wallpapers, it can feel hard to break the mould and really do something different. But eye catching features and unique decorative touches don’t have to cost the earth.

Don’t make the mistake of trying to buy it in all at once – true stylish individuality in interiors only comes gradually over time and as your life evolves in a space. With the increase in new-build housing, with its perfect, bland beige interiors, being able to express your personality and individuality through your home feels more important to more people than ever before. Adding some impact can be done easily and in a relatively budget-friendly way if you know how. Start by making little changes and, as you discover your taste, you’ll get bolder and more experimental over time. Inject some much needed originality to your space today.

Try some new materials

Sometimes, adding a dash of the unexpected to your home design can be as simple as switching up the materials you choose to use. Using something from left field is a great way to experiment, because you can make it as neutral or as statement as you like – the material choice alone is enough to elevate the design, before you even begin to layer in factors like colour and proportion. The materials you choose to use can enhance the look you’re going for.

Unrefined textures and raw materials can bring the great outdoors in and create either an industrial chic or quite a rustic home look, depending on how you choose to use them. Successfully incorporating unusual materials is all about creating enjoyable design contrasts –  like silk tasselling on a lampshade paired with an exposed brick wall.

Textured wallpapers are making a comeback too and are a brilliant low key way to add a subtle impact to a space. Embossed or leather effect materials can be used for headboards or feature panelling on the ways in a very effective way. Polished concrete floors can look hugely luxurious as well as being the ultimate in practicality for those with small children or family pets.

You can think outside the box and achieve amazing results – what’s to stop you using those amazing floor tiles as a wall display, or even using artificial lawn as your hallway floor covering – click here for some samples that may well give you ideas. Daring to be different here can really create the wow factor.

Go for a hybrid design

Where bold originality is required, blending disparate styles that you love can produce a startling original result. Whether you’re into vintage finds, a bit of industrial chic or bold prints, combining differing trends and finding the balance between them is a sure-fire way of creating something that doesn’t look straight out of a catalogue.

The key to a successful mash-up is in keeping the different elements in harmony. Much like successful fashion, the best looks feature a contrast – clean modernist lines clashed with overblown, chintzy florals or heritage shapes in modern materials such as the Kartell Ghost chair, which marries a Louis XIV style design with clear Perspex. Great design is all about visual contrasts, so get thinking about what elements you could combine.

Show your personality

Your home should be all about you and showcasing what you love, so turn a collection into a talking point by presenting it properly. Into vintage china? Use shadow box frames to create a striking display of your favourite patterned china pieces and give them the focus they deserve. Grouping similar objects together can give a room a real focal point and elevate a normal space to something that feels more high-end.

If you collect beautiful shoes, source a vintage armoire, cover the interior with patterned wallpaper and display your most gorgeous pairs. Or if you love family history, how about creating a stunning wall of framed black and white portraits of family members through the ages – a modern version of the ancestral oil paintings.

If photos aren’t your thing it could be a collection of vintage movie posters. When similar objects are grouped together, rather than scattered around your home, they begin to look far more intentional and make much more of an impact. It’s a great talking point for your home which is highly individual and injects a huge dose of personality into your space.

Add some detail

Standing out is often a case of adding some bold and unusual detail that takes your room from run of the mill to show-stopper. A super bold patterned wallpaper can have the effect of lifting a room and adding design interest. If you have gorgeous historical features in a period property or you have something you really want to highlight, such as architraves, dado rails or cornicing, try painting them in a really bold shade like shocking cerise or cobalt blue.

This trick also works amazingly well with just the edges of door frames – bringing a subtle but intriguing burst of colour into a room in a very different way. Similarly, painting floorboards in an unexpected design or opting for patterned tile flooring can make a very big impact in a small or hard to use space and freshen up the whole look easily.

Review your lighting

Sometimes, adding personality to your home can be as simple as changing the lighting scheme. Instead of uninspired central fixtures, seek out retro lamps with patterned shades, wall mounted down-lighters or colour change LED strips that can complement the mood you’re going for in a room. A unique cascading ceiling light or striking chandelier can add intimacy and drama to an otherwise unremarkable space. Never underestimate the ability of great lighting to change up the feel of a room. Quirky light shades can also be a very easy and cost effective way to give your room a whole new look as well.

From house to haven – simple ways to create a heavenly base you call home

From house to haven - simple ways to create a heavenly base you call home

They say that there’s no place like home; but often, we find faults in our homes, or we struggle to turn a new house into the heavenly haven we crave. If you’re a fan of DIY projects, you’re interested in interiors, or you have grand plans to design a home that is perfect in every way, here’s a useful guide to help you create a base that ticks every box.

Remodel

Remodelling your favourite rooms can make your home feel like a haven. Focus on areas such as the kitchen and bath that play a huge role in your daily routine. Kitchen and bath remodeling projects will enhance both the functionality and comfort for you, while reflecting your personal style and increasing relaxation and efficiency. Consider modern fixtures, smart storage solutions, and soothing colour schemes that can bring new life to these important spaces that feel both practical and inviting.

Colours

Have you ever noticed that different colours have an impact on your mood? Many of us consider colourways one of the most important interior design features, and injecting colour or opting for a simple palette is a great way of running with a theme. If you’re shopping around for paint, you’re looking for accessories, or you’re toying with the idea of buying wallpaper, think about the kind of ambiance you want to create and how you can use different colours to set the tone of different rooms and spaces. Some colours, for example, yellow and orange, are proven to energise and motivate us, while others, such as shades of blue and green, have a much more calming impact.

Within your home, there are probably spaces that you utilise for different purposes. Your bedrooms are likely to be peaceful, relaxed areas, while your living room and kitchen may be social hubs. Match the colours you choose to the function of the room. In the bedroom, you want to be able to switch off, kick back and unwind, so avoid bright colours and clashing prints and opt for shades that will promote serenity. Pastels are a great choice, and neutral tones like beige, white, and grey work really well, particularly in compact spaces.

For rooms that tend to be used for entertaining, socialising and enjoying hobbies and activities, go for something a little bolder. If you don’t want to go all-out with vivid yellow walls or patterned paper, you can lift plain, neutral walls with pictures and prints and coloured accessories. If you’ve got a white kitchen, for example, you could accessorise with red, pink, black or yellow appliances, storage containers and utensils.

Comfort

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of curling up in front of the TV, or climbing into bed and getting comfortable at the end of a busy day or a frantic week. There are several ways you can enhance comfort in your home, and one of the easiest and most affordable is using soft furnishings. Scattering throws on sofas and throwing cushions on couches, chairs and beds is a great way to create that cosy, lived-in look and make the areas that are designed for relaxation more appealing and alluring.

The seasons can impact how you spend your time and how you want to decorate your home, but soft furnishings work all year-round. In the chilly winter months, opt for heavy-duty, snuggly materials like wool and faux fur and replace them with lighter textiles such as linen and cotton as temperatures rise.

Another effective way of facilitating comfort at home is investing in the right kind of furniture for every room. If you’ve got an eye for interior design, of course, you want your home to look fabulous, but you also want to feel comfortable. Resist the temptation to buy sofas or chairs that look funky if they don’t provide relief after a long day at work. Try different styles for size when you’re shopping for seating or you’re looking for a new bed. You don’t want to rely solely on looks.

Temperature

When you’re at home, you want to channel Goldilocks when it comes to room temperature. You don’t want to be freezing cold and feel like you have to put your entire wardrobe on before getting out of bed, and you also don’t want to be sweating buckets when you’re trying to watch TV. It’s essential to get the temperature just right, so that you feel comfortable no matter where you are in the house.

If you live in an area where seasonal changes mean that you experience a range of conditions, it’s wise to consider investing in adaptable heating and cooling systems. You might find that you need to crank up the heating in the winter, but that you can’t live without air conditioning in the summer. If you do have different systems in place, customise the settings to suit your preferences; and don’t forget to keep up with basic maintenance.

When summer is approaching, look for a company that specialises in AC repair and routine services. And when temperatures start to tumble, get your heating system checked over. This will save you money in the long-run and eliminate the risk of finding yourself in a situation where you’re shivering in the winter or struggling to get cool in the summer.

Very cluttered living/dining room

Clutter

Clutter is a major obstacle to beautiful aesthetics and tranquil, zen vibes. If you’re trying to turn a house into a home and you want to design a space that makes you feel content and calm, there’s no place for clutter. If you’re a hoarder, or you’ve managed to accumulate a lot of stuff and you don’t have enough storage, now is the time to declutter. Decluttering will make your home look much more attractive and spacious as well as making you feel better.

The process of clearing space and getting rid of stuff you didn’t even know you had is incredibly cathartic. Adopt a methodical approach to tidying and throwing things that you don’t want to keep away. Go through each room, unpacking boxes and creating piles of items you want to keep, those you’re looking to donate or give away, and those that you want to chuck in the trash. Once you’re left with belongings that you want to keep hold of you can work on finding places to store them.

If you’re short on storage, invest in boxes, crates and tubs. Look into options like wall-mounted units and shelves and consider buying furniture with built-in storage. Similarly, if you have a small bedroom, you can reduce the risk of clutter by buying a bed with hidden drawers or installing wardrobes that have pull-out rails and racks.

Me time

For most of us, life can get hectic. When you’ve had a crazy day at work, or you’ve been rushed off your feet running around after the kids, it’s crucial to be able to enjoy a bit of me time in the comfort of your own home. Every home should have areas, no matter how small, that enable their owners to take time out, chill out and relax. If you don’t have a huge house with space for a reading, painting, or music room, you can section off a corner of a living area, turn your bedroom into a private sanctuary or even set up a crash pad in the backyard.

Give yourself time and space to do things that make you happy and enable you to unwind and mentally shut down. You can use screens or furniture to divide rooms, or create distinctive areas in the garden by using different types of materials; for example, turf, gravel and wooden decking.

Many of us dream of having a home that feels like a heavenly haven. We crave that feeling of security and comfort and we look forward to being at home and spending quality time with loved ones. If your house isn’t quite ticking all the boxes, or you’ve recently moved, and you’re looking for ways to get everything just right, hopefully, this guide has given you inspiration.

3 Home projects that can make your life a lot more interesting

3 Home projects that can make your life a lot more interesting

Basically, everyone wants to have an interesting life and to be able to find pleasure, entertainment and insight in their everyday routines, hobbies and practices.

After all, how often does anyone really daydream about doing a boring office job that they hate and that seems about as exciting as watching paint dry?

Depending on your particular interests, engaging in different DIY and decoration projects around the home may or may not seem particularly interesting or fun. But, you may be surprised to discover that when you actually apply yourself to various home improvement tasks, they can truly become really enriching.

Here are a few home projects that you can do, that can make your life a lot more interesting.

Pile of magazines and periodicals

Try to set it up so that every room has a particular, meaningful function

It’s already obviously the case that the different rooms in the average home do actually have set ‘functions’, right? After all, the kitchen’s for cooking, the bathroom‘s for ablutions, the bedroom is for sleeping and so on.

In practice, though, we often end up using the different rooms in our homes in a more general kind of sense. We’ll nap in the living room, surf the web and watch TV in the bedroom and just treat most of the home as one general and undefined space for hanging out in.

Making an effort to actually set it up so that every room in your home has a particular and meaningful function can be a really enriching and positive exercise to undertake.

The key here is that you’re going to actually try to structure the different rooms in your home so that you use them in a unique and engaging way, rather than just for the usual, necessary, everyday functions of cooking, eating etc.

Instead of just setting up your living room as a place where you can relax and watch TV, make a point of trying to turn it into the best possible place for having meaningful conversations and social interactions with your guests.

How about including interesting picture books and magazines on the coffee table, keeping a chessboard set up for an impromptu game or keeping a record player and vinyl collection in the vicinity; just to make things a bit more interesting?

Eaves bedroom with a woodland cabin theme

Set yourself an ideal home template, and work to transform your home in line with that ideal, room by room

Setting yourself an ideal home template can be a great thing to do, because it gives you an interesting and exciting goal to work towards and helps you to direct your home decoration efforts in a meaningful way.

When you’re setting your ideal home template goal, make it really big, bold and ambitious. Take the time to look through different home design magazines and let your imagination run wild.

If you could have your fantasy dream home tomorrow, would it be something like a romantic French castle, a rustic cabin in the woods or a hyper-modern apartment in the heart of a bustling city?

Once you set yourself this goal, work on transforming your home in harmony with that ideal; room by room and stage by stage. Don’t expect to have these home projects completed in the near future – but treat them as an ongoing adventure. Look for discount deals for furnishings from websites such as NetVoucherCodes.co.uk, visit antique centres and second-hand shops and take pleasure in the process of transforming your home bit by bit.

Simply having a big and ambitious target like this to work towards can make your life significantly more interesting and can give you a fun hobby in which to engage at the same time.

Sewing room

Use your home as the setting for more ‘Do It Yourself’ hobbies

Thanks to the abundance of entertainment options available to us all today – ranging from Netflix to on-demand TV – it’s a bit too easy to spend all our free time idly amusing ourselves and passively absorbing information rather than actively creating things.

One great thing that you can do with your home to make your life more interesting is to turn a spare room – or even just a corner of a room – into a setting for exploring a DIY hobby that you’d be interested in adopting.

This could mean having a room in your house dedicated to woodworking, sewing, creating artworks or even recording your own music in pursuit of the ambition of becoming the next rags-to-riches DJ sensation.

When you have an area of your home dedicated to some hands-on pastime like this, all sorts of doors can open up to you and things can get a lot more interesting.
