Property spotlight: Passive homes

Hardwicke Road Hastings, East Sussex TN34 3PE

No, passive homes aren’t argument averse or really chilled out. Passive homes are energy efficient, carbon-neutral or even carbon-negative properties.

Our research has uncovered passive homes in every corner of the country and at every price point. There are affordable, social housing schemes all the way up to millionaires’ budget, bespoke builds; starter homes to retirement properties; houses by the coast, in the city centre or overlooking a golf course.

Increasingly, architects, construction companies and property developers will have to be more environmentally conscious when it comes to designing and building properties. Octopus Energy have teamed up with a number of home builders to offer new homes Zero Bills™.

Zero Bills™ homes generate more energy than they consume. They achieve this using a combination of low carbon tech – solar PV and a battery – and electric heating.

High levels of insulation coupled with an airtight membrane, create low U-Values and reduction of any thermal bridges. Your airtight home will allow you to reduce your energy usage and emissions on a daily basis.

* Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery (MVHR) systems are used to reduce heat loss from ventilation, and filter the air coming into your home, allowing for up to 4 times cleaner air.
* Triple-glazed windows aid with the efficiency of your home, whilst proving to reduce external noise levels- allowing you to live in the centre of a bustling city, without the noise.
* Every purchaser becomes a part of the Community Interest Company which gives residents more control over their surroundings & allows for a no ground rent policy. Our other established communities, created by CICs across Yorkshire, now arrange community activities such as summer BBQs, Christmas wreath-making and even a weekly pub quiz team.
* We maximise natural energies from the sun via solar panels and thermal modelling is used to check if buildings meet our low energy targets (15kwh/m2/year).
* Its central location allows you to maximise on eco-friendly living practices, supported by free on-site bike storage and provisions for electric car charging stations, making the switch to zero-carbon transport easy.

Price Points: Recycled wool products

Recycled wool products

One of the most wonderful things about the coming of spring when you live in the Pennines or in West Wales is spotting the new season’s cute, little lambs.

Most sheep are reared for their meat; incredibly, their fleeces are almost worthless. I’ve heard it said that it costs more to shear a sheep than its wool is worth; that’s a crime! That’s why I’m championing recycled wool products in this week’s Price Points.

Wool is useful for so many purposes; fashion, homewares, cavity wall insulation and soundproofing and even as slug proofing and mulching in the garden. It’s a natural and eco-friendly material that can be transformed into many practical and beautiful products.

  1. Ulti-mutt yarn, 50g ball: £7.00, The Natural Fibre Company

…we have created a new yarn containing a blend of dog hair collected from a dog grooming contact blended with some Blue Faced Leicester wool.

  2. Small recycled 100% recycled wool rug: £12.99, Oxfam

This wool rug has been woven from recycled fibres, which have been re-spun to create this lovely product.

  3. Chimney Sheep draught excluders: from £23.50, Amazon

A Chimney Sheep® is a removable chimney draught excluder made from highly durable, naturally breathable Herdwick wool.

Price Points: Plantable calendars

Plantable calendars

It’s coming up to the time of year where people are beginning to think about post-Christmas and planning for 2023. I mostly do this with the help of virtual, online calendars that sync between my smart phone and laptop. However, I’ve always liked the idea of embarking upon the new year with a fresh A3 diary or bullet journal.

One of these plantable calendars would make the perfect Christmas present for an eco-conscious or gardening friend or family member. At the end of the year, rather than filing it away or putting it into the paper recycling, the pages can be planted up in the garden or into pots where they transform into wild flowers, salad or vegetables.

  1. Plantable calendar 2023: £15.65, Etsy
  2. Grow your own veg wall calendar 2023: £29.99, NOTHS
  3. Seedlings, deluxe botanical seed calendar 2023: £35.00 Calendar Club

Price Points: Plastic-free bowl covers

Plastic-free bowl covers

We’ve slashed our use of clingfilm in the kitchen by relying instead on various sizes of reusable plastic covers. Sometimes, however, we need a breathable cover for a foodstuff that could otherwise become damp or sticky. A clean tea towel would suffice, I suppose, but who wouldn’t prefer to use a set of these pretty, plastic-free bowl covers?

  1. Set of 4 eco gingham bowl covers: £9.99, eBay (For bowls 7cm – 35cm)

Great for outdoors to keep insects off salads in summer. Perfect for covering food in the fridge all year round. Can go in the microwave when reheating your leftovers.

  2. Single eco food bowl covers – ‘waste not / want not’ – 8 sizes: £6 – £20 each (For bowls 7.5cm – 38cm)

Bowl covers are made from unbleached calico cotton fabric (non-stretch) that is 100% recycled, with an elastic edge using eco-elastic made from natural rubber and organic cotton, making it entirely biodegradable, and an easy swap for a more sustainable kitchen. Each cover is screen printed by hand using non-toxic inks, heat sealed to help protect the print from fading and making it washing machine friendly, and finished with a hand printed label, and elastic ends covered with a cotton tab.

  3. Set of 5 linen bowl covers: £43.16, Etsy (For bowls 6cm – 30cm)

These fabric dish covers are made out of 1 layer 100% linen fabric, which is eco-friendly and biodegradable. Only Oeko – Tex Standard 100 (toxic-free products for the body and environment) fabric is used!
