Get their look: Perfect pantry

Perfect pantrycredit

Here I go again, lusting after other people’s food storage solutions! This perfect pantry is in the home of an American couple who built their home from scratch.

The nearly black cabinetry and pure white Italian quartz are a beautiful backdrop for the rows of sparkling stainless steel appliances and clear canisters full of dry goods. Speaking of which, their spice cupboard gives me all the good feels… storage jar goals!

Many of the rooms in their house have been decorated using a pared back monochrome palette; it gives a great flow as you move from room to room.

They even make their own artworks and feature walls – and share how they created them in free tutorials on their website.

Price Points: Travel condiment sets

Travel condiment sets

Often, when we drive somewhere for a day out, we stop for a drink or bite to eat. Instead of stashing a hodgepodge of sachets of sugar, sauces, salt, pepper etc in the jumbled glove box, these travel condiment sets is a much smarter option.

When we go to the seaside, we often have takeaway fish & chips. A bit of extra salt & vinegar as you work your way through to the lower layers is often desirable. And when we visit a new town with a nice looking bakery or butchers, Justin always likes to try out the local sausage rolls and pork pies. I often sample their cheese & onion versions. A bit of tangy chutney adds an extra twist.

Also, we’ve started travelling with a rucksack containing vacuum flask of boiling water, two travel mugs and a couple of Kenko flat white sachets. They’re perfect for a quick brew en route. Justin has sugar in his coffee, and has taken to putting two spoonfuls into his mug before putting the lid on it. One day, the lid is going to pop off and scatter sugar all round the inside of the rucksack.

When I think about what condiments and additions we generally need on a trip away, the 7-piece set would be the best fit. We’d need somewhere for all the aforementioned sugar, salt & vinegar, ketchup, chilli sauces, chutney and the like.

Grown-up lunch boxes | H is for Home

If you’re about our age – i.e. you grew up in the 70s & 80s – you may have had one of those metal lunch kits that you carried to school each day. What do you do now that you’re an adult? Sure, you could re-purpose an old ice cream container to accommodate your mixed salad. Or you could use the bag that your loaf of bread came in to carry your egg mayo sandwiches.

Doesn’t your carefully prepared packed lunch deserve better than that? Wouldn’t you rather punctuate your working day with something more pleasing to the eye as well as the palate? We’ve chosen a trio of grown-up lunch boxes that you’d be proud to pull out from your work bag when you arrive at the office in the morning.

My favourite of the three is the Zero Waste set. The ‘paper bag’ lunch holder is actually made from Tyvek, a lightweight, water-resistant, breathable material that is 100% recyclable. The flask is bamboo on the outside and stainless steel on the interior. The cutlery (knife, fork, spoon and chopsticks) is made of bamboo and there’s also a stainless steel drinking straw.

There are two different types with differences in shade of green and lettering style. We’re not exactly sure of their age – we’ve had these tins dating anywhere from the 1920s to the present day. They have a timeless look and appeal that never goes out of fashion really.

'flour' and 'pasta' cream & green kitchen storage tins | H is for Home

They’ve just gone into our antiques centre space yesterday – this kind of item always looks good in there amongst the country furniture and other vintage kitchenalia… and it certainly makes an eye-catching display.

They’re easily packaged up & posted though, so drop us a line if you see anything you fancy – and we’ll go and intercept it before it sells in the shop.
