Get their look: Monochrome bedroom

Monochrome bedroomA post shared by Mina (@vintage_skye)

This monochrome bedroom looks like a wonderful spot to get some shut-eye. The white, soft greys and natural touches make it a very restful environment.

The space is like a mini art gallery; if you scroll through Mina’s Instagram history, her collection of framed prints switch and update regularly. With that, and the changing of the bed linen, it’s almost like being in a different room!

Finally, the mother-in-law’s tongue plant on the side table in the monochrome bedroom is a big yes-yes (does anyone say that or did I just invent it? Maybe it will catch on!). Not only does it help clean up nasties in the air it’s one of the few plants that releases oxygen, rather than carbon dioxide, during the night.

Phoebe’s room is a fabulous bedroom that can be grown into. Judging from the pretty dress & shoes, Phoebe appears to be about 5 or 6-years old. Even if her Emily, her mum, was never to redecorate again Phoebe wouldn’t grow out of this room even into her teens and beyond.

There’s ample storage space with the double wardrobes and a chest of drawers (not shown in this square) that’s painted the same bright yellow as the fireplace and child’s chair. And, speaking of that fireplace, doesn’t it look amazing against the deep grey chimney breast?

I think Phoebe’s room would be wished for by lots of other little (and not so little) girls!

Easy ways to make your home look more modern

Easy ways to make your home look more modern

If you’re concerned about your home looking tired or dated, then the first thing you need to know is that it’s more than possible to turn things around. Sometimes a few simple décor changes are all you need to bring your home into this century; and by taking the time to plan your design, you can be sure to get a satisfactory result.

Drawing house plans

Scale plan

Drawing up a scale plan is so important. You need to know what space you have to work with so that you can plan your interior. It will illustrate the size and shape of areas before you embarking on spending money on anything. If you find it difficult to draw your room designs, there are plenty of apps available that can do it for you; if simply enter the dimensions. A scale plan, either on paper or done on a computer, can be a time-saving, useful resource.

Fan of paint colour chips

Introduce earth tones

Earth tones can make a space feel a lot bigger and help it look much more contemporary too. The next time you’re shopping for wall coverings, pick up paint chips and charts of possible suitable colours that are available. You’d be surprised at how much choice there’ll be! When deciding on your paint or wallpaper, it may be practical to choose something that’s not too dark. If you do, it will drain the light from the room and will make the space look and feel smaller as well.

Bright modern lounge

Mirrors and art

A large, statement mirror hung on a wall can give the illusion of space to a small room. In addition, adding artwork adds colour, interest and personality. These homewares will really up your modern décor game and can help to bring a space together. If you’re stuck as to what kind of art you should decide upon, choose something that appeals to your individual taste – not what is currently fashionable. You could choose an original oil painting, a poster of a favourite film or even a framed inspirational quote. On the other hand, you could hang a collection of personal photographs of friends, family and places you visited on your travels.

Black Google Home device and iPhone

Technology

Another thing that you can do is invest in technology. When you do, you’ll bring your home into this century and make it look more appealing at the same time. Purchase electric wall heaters or even think about installing state-of-the-art home features such as a smart TV, intelligent mood lighting or wireless audio system. These devices will really make your home look more modern.

The first thing that drew me to this arty living room is the Eames chair given a makeover with that fabulous green, spotty material. The second was Nola’s little face – isn’t she just the cutest?!

I love a home that’s so obviously pet friendly – Nola along with her feline sibling Diggy Smalls regularly grace Nicole’s Insta-squares, usually lounging together on the aforementioned Eames chair.

There are lots of statement pieces in this room – the massive black and white abstract canvas, hot pink woollen throw, red zebra-print cushion – yet they all work together so well.

It’s a stimulating yet comfortable space – perfect for the canine and feline inhabitants… oh yes, and humans too!
