Home Tones: Nearly Black

You’d be hard pressed to open an interiors magazine today without being presented with rooms bedecked in nearly black. It’s a recent favourite, especially in wall coverings. Farrow and Ball’s Railings must be the most famous deep grey paint colour on the market right now.

If you don’t wish to be that bold, you can test the waters by using it as an accent colour – in furniture, soft furnishings and lighting. It’s just the best colour for showing off brass, blond & chestnut coloured woods, yellows, lime green, blood red, teal and shades of white.

It works so well when hit by shafts of natural daylight and is quite magical by night too, lit softly by lamps or the flickering flames of real fires and candles.

All the photos that we’ve featured here prove that nearly black can work successfully in any room of the house. Go on, embrace the darkness! 🙂

Home Tones: Olive Green

Of all the shades of green out there, olive green is probably our favourite. That shouldn’t come as any surprise, it’s the colour of the H is for Home branding. It’s restful and natural, and works very well with wood – both light and dark in colour – from a blonde 1950s Ercol chair to a richly patinated antique oak coffer. Complementary tones include lime green, yellow ochre, khaki and cream. Good contrasting highlight colours include red, orange and purple – think flowers against foliage.

Home Tones: Khaki

So far, we’ve only featured bright, vibrant colours in our Homes Tones series. This week’s Khaki post will really calm things down, so to speak. Make no mistake, khaki isn’t some ‘drab‘ beige or magnolia; it means business! Khaki is fashionable yet timeless – think of those classic trench coats, chinos and Bermuda shorts – and the same goes for using it in your home.

If like us you like a little flash of colour, you can team it with almost anything – fire engine red, racing green, orange, royal blue… If you don’t and prefer muted tones, match it with chocolate brown, sage green, white or even black. Khaki is such a flexible colour! 🙂

Home Tones: Bubblegum pink

Pink doesn’t have to be all girly or sickly. Some men can look very smart and sophisticated when they wear pink. The same goes for home interiors.

Team bubblegum pink with bright white, charcoal grey or ‘nearly black’ and the results can be stunning. Or how about contrasting it with tangerine or turquoise for a really tropical, South East Asian feel?

So banish those thoughts that pink may conjure up of Frenchie from Grease, Pepto-Bismol or pink-dyed poodles topiaried to within an inch of their lives!
