Price Points: Bedside lamps

Bedside lamps

We’re still using the same pair of vintage 1960s/70 brown goose neck bedside lamps that we had in our previous house. They don’t really suit the country cottage décor of our current place.

We have a general idea about what we want but, for whatever reason, haven’t managed to find just the right ones. They’ll need to be neutral in colour; either brown, grey or sage green. I don’t want them to be girly… but I don’t want them to look masculine either. Our bedside tables are quite compact, so the lamps, too, will have to be small scale. We read, write and work in bed, therefore we’d want them to have flexible, hinged arms and shades where you can direct the beam of light depending on what we’re doing. Finally, and just as important as all the other previous points, they need to be good-looking!

So… perhaps you can see why it’s taken so long to hit on just the right ones!

Tealight holders

The autumn nights are drawing in, so it’s time to make the indoor rooms feel warm, inviting and cosy. Lighting these spaces is an important thing to consider. Atmospheric lamps, fairy lights and candles can all be used to great effect. Tealights are a great way to introduce the latter to your home – and of course, you’ll need the perfect tealight holders to show them off to their best effect. Here are three lovely examples that we’ve come across recently.

  1. Dillie stoneware tealight holder: £8.50, Nordic House
  2. Terracotta tea light holders: £11.99 per pair, Weston Mill
  3. Concrete black granite tea light holder (3 sizes): from £15.00, Etsy

Price Points: Natural conical lampshades

Natural conical lampshades

We’ve had a stunning vintage Bernard Rooke floor lamp for years, for which we’ve been waiting for an original lampshade to come up for sale. It’s been about a decade and, so far, we’ve had no joy.

It currently lives in our bedroom, looking very forlorn and bare – we’re going to have to bite the bullet and buy an alternative. I’ve looked into what the original ones look like – here, here, here and here. I want something in a similar colour and material, but cone-shaped to fit the space in which it’s located.

Below are the best natural conical lampshades – in suitable (large) sizes – that I could find for sale online.

    1. 70cm tall white hessian slim cone lampshade: £65.00, Etsy
      Height: 70cm
      Top width: 15cm
      Bottom width: 25cm
    2. Made to order reproduction fat lava/West German style large conical lampshade: £107.00, Etsy
      Height: 76cm
      Top width: 25cm
      Bottom width: 35cm
    3. Cone lamp shade, natural – designed by HKliving: £149.00, Trouva
      Height: 58cm
      Top width: 30cm
      Bottom width: 36cm

Auction alert: Fine Art & Antique Auction

Set of six 1960s Ercol blonde elm & beech wood kitchen chairs

Are you a BBC 6Music listener? Strange question to come out with? The reason I ask something like that on this Auction Alert post, is because 6Music DJs all play music that is an ‘eclectic mix’… and so are the lots in the sale we’re featuring this week. Furniture, jewellery, paintings, textiles, clocks and books are just a few of the types of items on offer.

Trevanion & Dean Auctioneers based in Whitchurch, Shropshire are holding one of their regular 2-day, Fine Art & Antique Auction sales. It takes place on Wednesday 22nd & Thursday 23rd September 2021 from 9am.

There’ll be a buyer’s commission charge of 20% + VAT. If you plan on bidding online, you can bid live through their website here for a further 2% + VAT. They also offer live, online bidding through the-saleroom.com and easyliveauctions.com, please note, bidding on these platforms also incurs additional charges.

If you wish to bid remotely and have any winning lot(s) delivered to you, the auction house explains:

If you are unable to collect your winning lots, Trevanion Auctioneers offer a limited in-house P&P service for small, non-breakable items during the week following the auction only.
