Price Points: Outdoor folding chairs

Outdoor folding chairs

We’ve been walking in the great outdoors three times this week in almost as many days; we’ve really been taking advantage of this little patch of late summer sunshine. A couple of outdoor folding chairs – kept in the boot of the car for impromptu stops – would be a great addition for days like these.

They’d need to be waterproof… it’s going to rain at some point, that’s guaranteed. They’d also have to be lightweight; we may have to park a long way away from where we plan to sit. Chairs made of hollow aluminium with woven plastic seats & backrests are our best bet.

The three pictured tick all the boxes. The seagull outdoor folding chair is really cute, the green one is a favourite colour and the yellow one is just drop-dead gorgeous. Much as I’m in love with the D4E, the fifteen hundred pound each price tag would mean that we’d be worried that we’d damage them. They’d be out in the elements; on the beach, in sand and sea spray. We’ll be sitting in them in wet swimming gear. Perhaps one of the other two would be the better options.

Price Points: Everlasting lighters

Everlasting lighters | H is for Home

I love all kinds of gadgets, so when I happened across everlasting lighters I thought, “Those are really practical and so cute!”.

#1 and #2 both resemble boxes of matches; however, the ‘boxes’ are reservoirs that you keep filled with lighter fluid and the ‘match’ is a permanent wick similar to one you’d find in an oil lamp. The Match Lite was modelled on the vintage 1960s Japanese Mitsugiri permanent match box and lighter.

Unlike a wooden match, these matches can be used hundreds of times on a single tank of gas. And also unlike a traditional box of matches they ignite perfectly well if left abandoned in a dusty drawer for years and years. One person reported finding one belonging to his granddad that was bought 40 years prior – and sprung to life on the first attempt!

The ‘Friendly Swede’ works by a different method to the other two. The shorter ‘key’ is struck along the length of the longer rod. It’s similar to the caveman approach of striking of a pair of flinty rocks together to produce sparks in order to ignite a tangle of dry twigs or leaves.

All three are tiny enough to pop into the pocket of a rucksack or waterproof coat and forget about it – until it’s retrieved in an emergency scenario such as may happen when you’re at a festival, wild camping in the wilderness… or just having a barbecue at home and you can’t find any matches!

  1. Permanent metal match box and lighter: £2.49, eBay
  2. Vintage 1970s Match Lite striker lighter: £11.58, Etsy
  3. Steel ferrocerium stick with striker: £17.99, Amazon

Nature identification guides | H is for Home

Having to spend so much of the day in lock-down, indoors and in isolation makes you more aware of your wider surroundings. With the good spring weather, people have been spending their limited time outdoors, walking and cycling and generally appreciating the environment.

We’ve been noticing the growing presence of wild birds, butterflies and the reawakening trees. Here are a number of nature identification guides that we’ve found to help you in your quest to recognise what’s around you.

Mushrooms add magic to our autumn walks

Large fly agaric

We love our countryside walks – we find them restorative and uplifting. In fact, the abundance of paths and trails on the doorstep was a big factor when deciding to buy this new house. Each season has its own charms… and now it’s the turn of autumn. Misty mornings, stunning leaf colours, fruits, berries and of course, mushrooms.

After a heavy night’s rain, we woke up to the sun breaking through on Saturday morning, so we headed out. We have lots of woodland close by, and the open access allowed by Welsh Forestry is fabulous. We saw buzzards, red kites – and a gorgeous hare that was nestling down in the track-side grass – who, sensing us watching him, shot off through the dense trees like a pale ghost.

It was also perfect conditions for fungi & mushrooms – and our walk was punctuated by some lovely specimens of which we duly took pictures.

Gills on a wild mushroom | H is for Home Common earthball mushrooms | H is for Home

We’re getting a little better at identifying the different species… although we’ve got a long way to go. We think our sightings included Yellow Stagshorn, Ochre Brittlegill, Common Earthball, Peziza Badia and the unmistakeable Fly Agaric to name a few. Please feel free to fill in any gaps in our mushroom knowledge (or mistaken identities!).

These little jewels of colour, shape and texture are such a joy. It’s amazing that all these different types of fungi were photographed in a relatively small area, on the same day.

And when we got home, our new Esse kitchen range (installed on Thursday) was chuffing away. We had freshly brewed coffee – and bacon sandwiches/cheese toasties respectively – what a joy after a couple of months with no cooker. The perfect end to a wonderful morning!
