Pretty Green Mathmos lava lamp collab

Pretty Green x Mathmos lava lamp | H is for Home

We’ve never actually owned a lava lamp – so were very happy to receive one of the new, limited-edition versions produced by the original manufacturers Mathmos in collaboration with Liam Gallagher’s men’s fashion company, Pretty Green.

The Astro lava lamp is such a design classic – the idea of Edward Craven-Walker who founded the Mathmos company. The name ‘Mathmos’ actually comes from the French comic strip, Barbarella (later made into the cult classic film starring Jane Fonda). Mathmos is the bubble liquid force under the city – the choice of name becomes obvious when you see them in action. Introduced in 1963, it was an instant success, an icon of sixties and seventies interior décor. Their appeal has really stood the test of time. There have been all kinds of innovations and special editions, however the basic principal remains the same – and Mathmos is still going strong over 50 years later.

We opted to receive the pink and orange colourway for our Astro lamp. The lovely warm glow filled the room from the moment of plug in. As the lamp heats, the contents come to life. Initially stalagmite-like shapes form – then the classic globules develop. These globules gently rise, split apart and fall back down. Then they do it all over again, with slight variations to the movements and shapes formed each time. Edward Craven-Walker likened it to a repeating life cycle.

The atmosphere and warmth that they give to a space is quite unique – and they’re mesmeric to watch of course. If you’re in the mood to relax, there’s a little 2 minute clip below – just long enough to fall under its spell! (P.S. If you hear heavy breathing in the background, that’s Fudge our dog, not Justin falling asleep whilst holding the camera).

When it comes to lava lamps, don’t be tempted by lesser imitations. The brand authenticity, quality of materials, colour intensity and lifespan are all important factors that make the classic Mathmos the only real choice. In fact replacement bottles, bulbs and bases mean that your Mathmos lava lamp should last a lifetime.

Get their look: Mid-century lounge

Mid-century loungecredit

Our love affair with all things 50s-inspired continues with this mid-century lounge. It has many of the classic hallmarks of this type of space – light & airy, unfussy, optimistic. The furniture is stylish, yet retains a functional simplicity – the distinctive splayed legs and feet associated with the era are much in evidence. The parquet flooring is a wonderful original feature that really suits the overall design. Clean lines and hard edges are softened with textiles and lots of natural foliage.

Whilst we’re concentrating on the lounge area, we love the open plan nature of the apartment and glimpses through to the kitchen and mezzanine bedroom. The glazed panel works perfectly to section off the bedroom area whilst retaining the sight line and flow – this is cleverly echoed by the the mirror on the wall beneath.

Get their look: Cheery caravan

Cheery caravan belonging to Caro Davies of The Twinkle Diariescredit

This yellow-decorated, cheery caravan belongs to Caro Davies, owner of The Twinkle Diaries blog. Caro and her family have christened her Dolly Too (she replaced the original Dolly of whom they sadly grew out). Reading about Caro’s journey doing Dolly up and going off on adventures is really making us yearn for our own camper van.

We’ve been putting money aside and are getting close to our target now. She’s created a real ‘home from home’ with a distinct mid century modern flavour. It’s clean, practical and bright, yet very cosy too. A real inspiration – stylish spaces on wheels are perfectly possible. Hopefully we can achieve something similar ourselves… and head off into the proverbial sunset one day soon!

George Nelson style ball wall clock from Vita Interiors

Original vintage George Nelson clocks are beautiful, but quite hard to come by and very expensive! But you can get a similar look with one of these George Nelson style wall clocks from Vita interiors.

We’ve just received this great looking starburst clock from them and are happy to sing its praises. We go for quite an eclectic look in our house, mixing objects from various different eras. This mid century modern style clock sits comfortably with antiques, vintage and contemporary pieces equally well – and is therefore very good at linking these various eras to give a balanced feel to a room.

There’s a lot of space incorporated into the clock’s form which gives it a light and airy feel – and it casts lovely shadows too. The mix of materials works really well and we like the detailing in terms of walnut finials and hand shape.

It would sit comfortably in almost any room of the house. It has a nice, quiet tick so the bedroom’s definitely an option. It would look fab on the wall of a lounge, office or kitchen too. We’ve already identified plenty of potential sites for it to live in our house!
