I’m still fully immersed in my long-standing mustard love affair, so it’s no surprise that this sitting and work room attracted me.

Birmingham-based Medina is the award-winning blogger at Grillo Designs. She’s a DIY/upcycling maven, specialising in how to make your home your own when you’re living in rented. Check out her Instagram hashtag, #howirent.

I really love how she’s made use of the triangular space under the stairs – installing an office desk & chair and handy overhead shelf. The simple, wooden horizontal battens are used as further hanging storage space.

Get their look: Understairs chill-out area

The first thing that grabbed me about this understairs chill-out area was the patterned wallpaper. It just shouts, “Look at me, I’m gorgeous!”.

The space beneath stairs is often underutilised; it can lack head space and be an awkward shape. It is generally used (especially if it’s a hallway) as a dumping ground for shoes, bags, sports gear and kids’ bikes – but it can be so much more!

So what if you can’t stand up in there? It’s the perfect space for a day bed or low sofa with a little side table to put a lamp. How about a couple of bean bags, floor cushions or tatami mats? Add some made-to-measure bookshelves (like these clever ones made from wood pallets) and you have yourself a whole extra room!

We’re really trying to make more of an effort with our Instagram feed this month. To help us along, we’re taking part in the #Myhousethismonth photo challenge. That’s where we came across the gorgeous sitting room of Sjanneke, a Dutch artist & graphic designer. She goes by the moniker, yellowcouchstories – I think you can tell why! Her sofa is just beautiful, and it’s shown off to its best against the petrol blue painted wall.

This is a lovely, cosy snug to retreat to in the evenings. The space has a warm, soft grey palate – some subtle brighter shades brought into the scheme via artwork, textiles and books.

The curve of the bay window is mirrored by the curves of the gorgeous sofa. Imagine you and your partner, a glass of wine each, a bit of soft music and a warming fire whilst you catch up with each other at the end of a working day.

Or perhaps you’d relax here on your own, kicking back with a good book or magazine, reclining on the sofa, nodding off from time to time.
