Gimme Five! Coat hooks

Selection of five coat hooks

One by one, all our winter coats are coming back out of storage. The ones for when it’s windy, the ones for when it’s wet, the ones for when it’s cold… the dog-walking coats, the dressed-up-and-going-out coats.

All those coats are hanging – 3 deep – on the back of the porch door. It looks untidy – what we need are some sturdy, attractive coat hooks. We like multi-peg examples, so have chosen a small selection in contemporary, vintage industrial and mid century modern styles. We chose a couple with the atomic ball detailing because it’s a bit of a classic look – and whilst we really love the original Eames model, we also thought we should offer a slightly more affordable version too, so a similar look could be achieved on a smaller budget.

  1. Row of ten industrial hooks by Woods Vintage Home Interiors: £165, Notonthehighstreet
  2. Gumball coat hooks: £8, Oliver Bonas
  3. Drop XL coat rack: £59, Lovethesign
  4. Eames Hang It All Hooks: £207, Conran Shop
  5. Evan white metal/wood over the door 5-hook hanger: £10, Habitat

Gimme Five! Bathroom magazine racks

Bathroom magazine rack selection

Sometimes the bathroom is the only place you can get time to yourself – especially if you have a dog like ours who parks himself on the other side of the door and waits for you to finish!

My dad will kill me for saying this, but he used to have (and perhaps still does) a daily routine that involved a cigarette, the newspaper and the toilet. My sisters and I didn’t get driven to school until this morning ritual had been completed. I have a similar regular habit, but mine involves a glossy magazine, a glass of wine, tea lights and a bubble bath.

In both our cases, a bathroom magazine rack would come in very handy. One of the examples we feature below just stores reading material and handily hangs from the cistern. All the others are multifunctional, being receptacles for two very different types of paper. 🙂

  1. Free-standing loo roll holder & magazine rack: £19.99, Presents for Men
  2. Toilet set paper rail and newspaper rack: £19.99, Amazon
  3. Designer turquoise wire toilet roll holder and magazine rack: £30, Debenhams
  4. Toilet roll holder and storage with magazine rack: £10, Tesco
  5. Toilet mount home décor magazine rack: £11.99, eBay

Locker clean up

Renovated vintage industrial locker now storing cleaning items in the kitchen

Justin picked up an old metal storage locker last week. Initially, it was going to be a case of a quick wash then off to the antiques centre. We then decided it would make a great home for all our cleaning stuff which is scattered around the house in various corners & cupboards. So it became an up-cycling project instead.

The weather was still gorgeous then – the perfect job for a sunny afternoon in the garden.

The metal was primed, then painted a warm buttermilk cream colour to match other pieces in the kitchen.

We bought some clear, sticky-backed vinyl which can be printed on using a ordinary ink-jet printer. Then designed a little word cloud with appropriate housekeeping terms and ran a couple off (more of that later).

This was then attached to the door.

The locker is tall enough for mops & brushes which is ideal. There’s space for buckets and also a shelf on which sit polishes & sprays. We have a small section of wall between the window and door to the garden. It’s exactly the width of the locker so it’s found a perfect home.

We’re very pleased with the results. If you fancy doing something similar, we printed off two copies of the word cloud. We can post the other one off. You could use it on a similar locker, a wooden box – or perhaps an existing cupboard that you have in the house. Anyone interested? Just leave a comment on the post and we’ll pick someone at random in a week or so!

Vintage Viners cutlery storage table for sale by & in support of British Heart Foundation

We’ve not come across one of these before. A cutlery canteen, cum coffee table, cum cutlery storage. It looks to have been made or commissioned by Viners of Sheffield in the 1950s.

The table is for sale by & in support of British Heart Foundation* in Motherwell. It has lovely mid century modern styling… and you get what looks like a load of highly collectable vintage Viners Chelsea cutlery thrown in as a bonus! We did a little research and found that the last one similar to this sold for £95 – this one’s starting bid is £49.99.

*British Heart Foundation is the nation’s heart charity. They help save lives with information, patient care and pioneering research. With your support, they’re beating heart disease for good.
