Advent calendars 2020

We’re not quite ready to blog about Chr*stm*s, but we’re nearly there! Each year, we try to bring you advent calendars that are a little different from the usual chocolates and beauty products.  Our advent calendars 2020 continue in that vein.

We’d be happy to open the little compartments on any of this trio; we’re fans of different teas and writing bits & bobs. And, everyone knows that it’s not just young kids that love Lego!

Price Points: Slow cookers

Slow cookers

Autumn’s here, and it’s the perfect time for those comforting slow cooker dishes. Think about all those bubbling stews, casseroles and curries to be enjoyed. One of my favourite things to make in the slow cooker is tarka dhal to serve with a paratha and basmati rice.

There’s a huge range in prices, from less than twenty quid to almost two hundred. Personally, I’d pick the Swan Retro model; the cream colour would go with the rest of our kitchen décor and the huge 6.5 litre capacity means that I can cook up a big batch of my dhal and store most of it in the freezer divided up into 2-person portions.

Slow cooking is one of the most economical cooking methods. Even though you’re cooking for hours at a time, slow cookers don’t use much electricity. I’ve read that it uses about the same amount of juice as a single light bulb; whether that’s an old fashioned one or those new-fangled energy savers, I don’t know…

Travel condiment sets

Often, when we drive somewhere for a day out, we stop for a drink or bite to eat. Instead of stashing a hodgepodge of sachets of sugar, sauces, salt, pepper etc in the jumbled glove box, these travel condiment sets is a much smarter option.

When we go to the seaside, we often have takeaway fish & chips. A bit of extra salt & vinegar as you work your way through to the lower layers is often desirable. And when we visit a new town with a nice looking bakery or butchers, Justin always likes to try out the local sausage rolls and pork pies. I often sample their cheese & onion versions. A bit of tangy chutney adds an extra twist.

Also, we’ve started travelling with a rucksack containing vacuum flask of boiling water, two travel mugs and a couple of Kenko flat white sachets. They’re perfect for a quick brew en route. Justin has sugar in his coffee, and has taken to putting two spoonfuls into his mug before putting the lid on it. One day, the lid is going to pop off and scatter sugar all round the inside of the rucksack.

When I think about what condiments and additions we generally need on a trip away, the 7-piece set would be the best fit. We’d need somewhere for all the aforementioned sugar, salt & vinegar, ketchup, chilli sauces, chutney and the like.

After a pretty decent summer, autumn is most definitely here… and so is the rain! I have one pair of waterproof bottoms that has seen better days, so I’m having a look at women’s walking trousers.

My old pair served me well on my daily dog walks, often out in that infamous Pennine weather. Now we’ve moved to an equally wet part of the country, the new pair is also going to have to be waterproof… or at the very least, water-resistant.

I really love the look of the mid-range Haglöfs pair – their cut and Velcro waist adjustment suits a curvy-hipped female figure. I also like the plethora of zipped pocket options – perfect if I’m carrying phone, camera, keys and money – nothing will slip out in the middle of a field or forest.
