Home Tones: Rose Quartz and Serenity

In the past week, ‘Rose Quartz’ and ‘Serenity’ have been chosen as the joint Pantone Colours of the Year for 2016. We’ve chosen to highlight various homes that use the two colours. Personally speaking, we’re not keen on using them together – it’s a bit reminiscent of 1980s coach seat upholstery.

They’re colours we think would be used to paint the walls in babies’ rooms – a little uninspiring – pink for girls, blue for boys. We have however found some interiors that use them successfully.

Home Tones: Christmas Red & Green

Many of us have heard the sayings, “Red & green should never be seen without a colour in between” and “Red & green should only be seen upon an Irish queen”. We generally concur with this regarding interior decoration… except at Christmastime of course, when these two colours come into their own. This traditional pairing somehow captures the mood of the festive season. From Santa’s outfit to berry-laden holly, fir trees, poinsettia, candy canes, pretty packages, candles, baubles and trimmings… and not forgetting the robin red-breast.

Home Tones: Black Coffee

This week’s Home Tones brings you all things black coffee coloured. It’s the shade of brown associated with wenge, a beautiful tropical hardwood.

It’s a very practical and forgiving colour for use on walls and floors; hiding all manner of scuffs, marks… and scribbles! Perfect for those with kids or big, active dogs like ours (or rather, big muddy dogs most of the time recently!).

It has real warmth and atmosphere, working perfectly with other natural shades – and contrasting well with creamy whites and greens. Pair it with highlight metallics such as gold, brass and copper on lamps, taps, light switches and sockets.

Home Tones: Pewter

We’ve chosen a metallic shade for this week’s Home Tones topic. It’s not a sparkling, showy metallic like gold; but it possesses a rich, reflective quality all the same – and a real depth of colour which can be quite sumptuous. This is especially so if it is warmed up with accessories made from wool, cashmere, suede or fur.

It can form a neutral scheme with different shades & tones of pewter subtly layered on top of each other – or lifted with colours such as purple or yellow which work very well. It compliments all types of wood too – from a contemporary beech kitchen worktop against a shimmering pewter coloured splash back – to the classic look of antique pewter sitting on richly patinated oak furniture.
