Designer Desire: H. Stern

Montage of Hans Stern jewellery designs

Do you watch Antiques Roadshow? What have been some memorable moments? On the programme a couple of weeks ago, someone brought in a stunning piece of jewellery designed by H. Stern – a company I hadn’t come across before. The piece was absolutely sensational!

Hans Stern (1922-2007) was born to a Jewish family in Essen, Germany. At the outbreak of World War II, when he was 17, he immigrated to Brazil. In 1945, after working for a Brazilian gem exporter, he founded his own company, H. Stern. Four years later, the first H.Stern store was opened on the Rio de Janeiro docks – the entry point for international cruise ships. Since then, they’ve expanded to over 160 stores worldwide in cities such as London, New York, Frankfurt and Moscow. The family-run company is currently headed by one of Hans’ four sons, Roberto.

The designer has a number of high profile and celebrity fans; including Rihanna, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lopez and Janelle Monáe – modelling the creations on the red carpet at film premières. the Oscars and Golden Globes.

The designs are primarily semi-precious stones such as amethysts, tourmalines, aquamarines, peridots, topaz and citrines set into 18k yellow gold.

  1. I have never watched Antiques Roadshow as I don’t watch much tv but would like to watch it at some point in the future

  2. I do watch the Roadshow; for some it’s the high valuations that stand out but for me it’s not the valuations that are memorable but the moving stories behind medals.

  3. My favourite moment was when I appeared on television when the show visited Pembroke Castle. The item I brought in was an old gold coin that my uncle had given me and it was valued at £2000. My moment of fame

  4. I have not watched this for years but I vaguely recall some young boy having a table or something valued at a really high amount

  5. My brother was on the show. He took a piece of Jewelry that was a family heirloom. Sadly it wasn’t worth much. Definitely my most memorable moment though.

  6. I have a pair of H Stern earrings with purple and green stones, which I hardly ever wear as they don’t really go with anything I own (they were a gift and not really something I would have chosen myself). I don’t watch Antiques Roadshow as I can’t stand Fiona Bruce.

  7. I haven’t seen an episode for about 2 years, but I enjoy it when I do watch it. I particularly like the furniture, especially those with secret draws and curios.

  8. Memories for me has to be of seeing people’s faces when they have an unusual item, don’t know what it does and are amazed when it fetches thousands at auctions!

  9. I only watch occasionally, but I do enjoy it when someone discovers that their item is worth thousands.

  10. i do watch it –i think my favourite was when someone had a bus timetable -sketched on and signed by lowry–can`t remember the value—but it was a lovely story

  11. What a lovely story. I rarely watch the programme these days but remember the incredibly old and valuable owl from quite a few years ago.
