In 1950, Hal Fromhold, emigrated from the UK to Vancouver. He first broke into ceramics via adult evening classes; progressing on to study under F. Carlton Ball for a BA degree at the University of Southern California. In 1958, he attained an MA from Ohio State University, after which he returned to Los Angeles. Following a year of teaching, he founded his own ceramic studio.
Now considered an American artist, Hal Fromhold creates work that is quirky and unusual – especially his often featured human figures. Bertil Vallien, in the early 1960s, was one of the designers who produced work under the Hal Fromhold studio name.
