Three of my all time favourite things are wrapped up into one with the S+ by ResMed – tech, stats… and sleeping!

Boxed S+ by ResMed | H is for Home

I was sent a sample to review and another to give away to one of our readers. As you may have seen in a previous post recently, I’m really interested in tracking my fitness levels and the quality of my sleep. I’m up for trying out any gadget that can help on either or both of those fronts.

As ResMed explains:

The S+ measures movements using ultra low power radio waves (less than 1โ„10 of Bluetoothยฎ). The basic principle is similar to the echo location system used by bats to hunt insects. The S+ transmits a short pulse of radio waves at 10.5 GHz and then listens for the echo of the pulse. As you move, the phase of the echo changes and is converted into a signal that reflects your movement.

It may be ultra high tech, but was very easy to set up. Firstly, I plugged in the device, then downloaded the app to both my iPhone and iPad, I then linked them to the S+ by ResMed via Bluetooth. The app asked a few questions… height, weight, do I sleep on my back, front or side; do I sleep with a partner or pet; the size of the bed; type of mattress and pillows etc. I registered on the S+ website and then went through a dry run whilst lying on the bed in the dark. Just look at the difference between my breathing patterns on left and right!

The app works continuously throughout the night to record breathing and movement to analyse the night’s sleep.

Not only does it show all the different stages of sleep (and any disruptions) it reports – every 20 minutes – on the temperature, light level and any noise in the room. It also works out how much body & mind have been recharged overnight.

My nightly sleep details via the S+ app | H is for Home

It scores a night’s sleep out of 100 and shows where ‘points’ have been lost. On the night in question, it took me a long time to fall asleep, I had a coughing fit and I also had a mild case of restless legs which really didn’t help. I just didn’t get enough REM or deep sleep.

My sleep score | H is for Home

Each night before setting the app, it asks questions such as how many caffeinated or alcoholic drinks had been consumed during the day. As you can tell from the scores on the following night, my sleep improved by 7%. Was it due to the couple of glasses of wine I consumed? Perhaps it was because the dog didn’t wake up, circle around and reposition himself, crashing into the side of the bed as he does most nights.

My sleep history recorded by the S+ by ResMed device

I’ve been using the monitor for less than a week so far, but I’m already totally hooked. I knew that for years I’ve been waking up each morning feeling exhausted, but not recalling the disruptions in sleep that have clearly been happening. The S+ mentor gives pointers as to how to up your score and, in so doing, improve your sleep.

ResMed is offering an S+ sleep monitoring system to one of our readers. Just leave a comment telling us what keeps you awake at night.

    1. Now you can think about the thoughts running through your mind and how they affect the resmed readings ๐Ÿ˜›

  1. At the moment it’s my baby bump! Due to give birth today but nothing as of yet! It’s hard to clear your mind

  2. I have generalised anxiety disorder. The slightest problem or worry will cause me to stare at the ceiling for hours !

  3. Lots of things! If the room’s too hot, the cat is on the prowl, I’ve got things on my mind, my husband is snoring . . . I even have to chose what I sleep in carefully or I wake up tangled in it. I’m a terrible sleeper.

  4. I’ve tried to use the sleep trackers in all-in-one devices like fitbits, and it’s been less than useful. You really need something like this if you want it to be a worthwhile effort.

  5. I wake up very early, between 4 and 5 am and even though I don’t feel fully rested, I can’t get back to sleep, so I worry about not being able to get back to sleep and that makes me even less able to get back to sleep.

  6. Overthinking everything and replaying what ifs keep me awake…. Closely followed by my neighbours that arguably all the time!!

  7. Ambient noises….the cat snoring, cars outside, owls, other people using the loo etc… im such a light sleeper i would really love to investigate options for a deeper night’s sleep..this system would be a godsend!

  8. Anxieties, temps… all sorts of things. I seem to be a picky sleeper. Using this would probably be really enlightening!

  9. Having imaginary conversations in my head with people who’ve upset me where I tell them exactly what I think of them because I’m too scared/polite to do it in real life!

  10. Overthinking everything that’s happened during the day and also thinking about what I want to do the next day

  11. Anxiety sucks!!! I’ve had it for about 10 years and I really struggle with insomnia. I wouldn’t wish anyone to be cursed with insomnia.

  12. If it’s been a bad day, if I’ve fallen out with someone, if I’m worried about one of the children not being well, anything I was meant to get done and didn’t get done. And when I’m finally asleep, the slightest noise will wake me up ๐Ÿ™

  13. Alternating day/night work shifts mean I never know whether or not I’m coming or going and neither does my other half ๐Ÿ˜‰

  14. Absolutely everything! It takes me a minimum of an hour to get to sleep, and then I wake up every time I roll over or my dog barks (often!)

  15. Very little, I didn’t mean to take it all, but if you are wondering where all the sleep has gone, I’ve got it. Pesky MS.

  16. my hubby, when he goes to get food or goes to the bathroom. he never manages a full sleep cycle so i would like this xo

  17. My 5 year old usually, with the 8 month old coming in a close second! Also, actually being too tired to go to sleep!

  18. I worry about work and even dream that I have done things wrong at work and then wake up and realise its just a dream !!

  19. Worries keep me awake sometimes when I start overthinking things and then I get wound up because I know the alarm clock will go off soon

  20. My mind goes into overdrive, probably because it is the first time in the day when it is quiet and I can actually think.

  21. agitation is the main thing that keeps me awake. Having a child that has random night terrors doesn’t help either as I am often lying in wait for it to happen even when it doesn’t.

  22. I’ve been tryuing to track sleep with a phone app and a fitness tracker, but it isn’t working very well Seems I really need a dedicated device.

  23. Worrying! I am very good at saving up all the worries of the day until bedtime – money, health, childcare, deadlines…

  24. Currently the political climate in both England and USA is keeping me up at night. I also need a better routine and would very much like to test out the new technology. ๐Ÿ™‚

  25. My husbands snoring! Being to hot, the rain, the kids, the dog, in fact can’t remember when I last slept through the night!

  26. partner snoring , me not able to switch of.. over thinking about everything … also any little noise annoys me ๐Ÿ™

  27. Thinking about what I want to do the following day and then wanting to get on and do it but not being able to keeps me awake!

  28. There’s major roadworks near here at the moment, as a result of which the major route is closed overnight. The rumbling of HGVs past my front door keeps me awake at night. Roll on 2017 when the work will be done.

  29. I don’t tend to have a problem falling asleep, my problem is staying asleep, I can wake up for no reason and then toss and turn for what seems like hours.

  30. Leave a comment below telling us what keeps you awake at night . . . . apart from hubby’s snoring, just generally thinking about the day just gone

  31. My 4 year old. She comes into our room every night and climbs into bed. It would be fine if she didn’t kick off the duvet and poke and prod me.

  32. I am not sure what keeps me awake at night but when I am awake I am thinking about many things and find it hard to get back to sleep!

  33. I stay in a village in the countryside so animals such as sheep and cows keep me up and my partner Snores!

  34. Pain keeps me awake at night, although often the pain relief i am taking means that i sleep most of the night, but keep waking up and it is not proper sleep so i wake up feeling just as tired as when i went to bed

  35. the neighbours safety light in their garden its super bright and shines through the side of my blinds ๐Ÿ™ I sleep with an eye mask
