Jos lives in Västerås in central Sweden. Her 1950s home is a celebration of colour and pattern and her patterned kitchen diner is eye-catching and welcoming.

The clash of Marimekko patterned walls and black & white window roller blind and chequerboard floor is just so right!

She has a marvellous collection of pottery, glass and tins – I’m often jealous of people in Scandinavia who can easily pick up all those lovely vintage cups & saucers, plates, drinking glasses and enamelware.

Have a browse of her squares (and swipe through the squares above) to see the before & after shots of her home.

Stylish and practical tips to design a stunning home that works for your family

Stylish and practical tips to design a stunning home that works for your family

One of the greatest challenges for property owners is balancing functionality with aesthetics. We all want our homes to look incredible, but they also need to work on a practical level. In this guide, we’ll discuss some simple steps you can take to design a stunning home that works for your family.

Consider your lifestyle

Every family is different. When you’re redecorating, renovating or looking for a new home, it’s essential to consider your lifestyle and how you use your home. Do you have young kids or older children, do you have pets, are you fans of the great outdoors, do you work from home or home-school your children? If you work from home, have small children, or spend a lot of time outside and enjoy adventurous pursuits, your dream home may look very different from a family with older kids and parents that commute to work every day and enjoy city life.

Think about ways you can design your home to suit your needs. If you need a lot of space for equipment for sports, for instance, or you work from home most of the time, look to create areas that you can set aside for storage and set up a quiet, comfortable workspace. If you don’t have room for a separate office, you could turn a guest bedroom into a study by swapping a double bed for a day bed or a sofa bed and adding a desk and chair, or you could get quotes for a loft conversion or adding a garden room.

Adjusting the layout of living spaces is often a great way to make your home work better for your lifestyle. If you have children, open-plan kitchens are brilliant as they enable you to help out with homework or keep an eye on young children while you cook, watch TV or sort loads of laundry.

Look for materials that are easy to maintain

Choosing materials for your home is important when it comes to striking the right balance between looking good and providing practical solutions. Look for materials that are easy to maintain, durable and hard-wearing and aesthetically pleasing. If you’re revamping your bathroom and you have pets or children, PVC shower panels could be an ideal choice. If you’re not sure about swapping tiles, it’s natural to have questions. What are the benefits to using PVC shower panels and are they waterproof? Yes, PVC shower panels are waterproof, they require no maintenance at all and they are extremely easy to keep clean. They also come in a range of styles and colours, so you don’t have to worry about sacrificing your dream design.

Dedicate zones to different activities

We use our homes to work, play, socialise, relax and enjoy quality time with our loved ones. It can be difficult to design living spaces that tick all of the boxes. One way to make your house work for everyone is to dedicate zones to different activities. Your living room and kitchen are likely to be sociable spaces where you hang out together, eat, play with the kids and have fun, but what about when you crave a moment’s peace or you want to relax when the children are in bed? Set aside areas where you can relax and unwind. This could be your bedroom, an adults-only bathroom, a corner of the living room where you can read or listen to music or a spare room you’ve converted into a yoga studio, gym or den to chill out or indulge your hobbies.

Take inspiration from others

Some people find it very easy to conjure up ideas for their home, but for others, it’s much more difficult. Take inspiration from other people and places you’ve visited. Perhaps you love the kitchen-diner in your friend’s house, or you went to a restaurant or a hotel that had a brilliant space that was both comfy and cosy and child-friendly. You can take elements from different designs, experiment with different trends and customise the space to suit your needs and preferences. Browse blog posts, scroll through social media and read interior magazines.

It can be challenging to create a home that looks amazing and works on a practical level. If you’re revamping your home, or you’re decorating or renovating a house you’ve recently purchased, look for ways to make your home stylish and functional. Consider your lifestyle and how you plan to use your home, look for materials that are easy to maintain and take inspiration from designs you’ve seen or places you’ve visited.

Designer Desire: Gilbert Rumbold

Montage of Gilbert Rumbold illustrations

A few weeks ago, we featured an auction lot that was a vintage book of cocktails illustrated by Gilbert Rumbold (a few images of it are included in the montage above). It was a 1st edition and examples have, in the past, sold for a whopping £600.00.

I was so taken by the very Art Deco book cover and illustrations that I delved into the internet to find more of his works. I haven’t found a lot, but what I happened across is smashing. He created beautiful fashion illustrations, decorative maps and – those 1930s obsessions – motor cars, ships and aeroplanes.

It is, however, the Savoy Cocktail book for which he is most well known. In fact, there’s still a cocktail named after him, served at the London Hotel’s American bar; consisting of Grey Goose vodka and champagne flavoured with cucumber, lime and peppermint.

Apparently, Gilbert Rumbold – who was from Broadstairs in Kent, tragically lost an arm in a train accident. He was fond of a tipple and often sketched the interiors of pubs such as the Captain Digby in Broadstairs.
