For a couple of years, we’ve been using a 2-ring induction hob during the warmer months. We tend to leave our wood-fired range from the late autumn through to the early spring. When we bought the hob, we had to buy a set of cream cast iron saucepans as our stainless steel and aluminium ones don’t work on it.
Just this week, I made a discovery – induction hob adapter plates! They allow you to use these aforementioned, defunct pans. You place it between your hob and your saucepan, and it transfers heat from the former to the latter.
Reading through the customer reviews of lots of different adapters, there’s a chance that it could mark the surface of your hob. A few people recommend that, to avoid this happening, you don’t need to have the power up as high as you usually would. Also, users report that pans take a much longer time to heat up than expected. This also means that you’ll be using a lot more electricity than if you simply use cast iron pans.
For me, I’d find one of these induction hob adapter plates useful when I’m making preserves. My jam pan is large and made of aluminium – so the larger the diameter of the plate, the better; the Trabo, therefore, fits my bill.
For many other people, from the reviews I read, miss being able to use their aluminium Moka coffee pots. Bialetti produces a fab adapter that’s perfect for their (and other brand’s) pots. At 13cm in diameter, it would also be suitable for smaller saucepans such as milk pans.
A preferred function for me would be a detachable handle – otherwise I could imagine it getting in the way when trying to cook. Again, the Trabo example offers this option.
