When we moved home in 2019, we replaced all our orange vintage Le Creuset cast iron pans because they wouldn’t suit the colour scheme in our new kitchen. As it turned out, the new, cream-coloured set we bought has proven to chip so easily that they look awful after just a few years’ use. How disappointing!

This week, I noticed this beautiful Habitat Global cast iron ochre cookware being sold at none other than Sainsbury’s. They’re very reasonably priced, at between £21 and £45.

The colour is so eye-catching, I’d love these gracing our kitchen, and they’d go well with our cream-coloured range, fridge-freezer and other small appliances.

Cast iron griddle stones

When the weather is really warm, we’re loath to turn on the wood-fired stove in the kitchen. For hot days like that, we invested in an induction hob. The main difference between an induction hob and a conventional gas/electric/wood-fired hob is the kind of pots & pans you can use on it.

They need to be made of material such as cast iron. Aluminium, glass or stainless steel won’t be suitable. The best way to check is to put a magnet to the base – if it sticks, you’re good to go!

We already had a few well-used & loved graduated cast iron frying pans however, after buying our induction hob, we purchased a set of cream enamel saucepans. To add to our cookery arsenal, I bought a cast iron griddle stone. It’s been great for making Welsh griddle cake, pancakes and this week’s yeasted flat breads.

We’ve listed three cast iron griddle stones below – ours is the example from John Lewis. We also love all the high quality pans manufactured by Netherton foundry in Shropshire. Just imagine cooking on a griddle from the 1800s, think of all the things that were made on it in the preceding 200 years!

In our former house, the kitchen had a bright orange feature wall, appliances and accessories. We knew even before we moved that the kitchen in our cottage would need to have a different colour scheme.

We sold on our collection of volcanic orange Le Creuset saucepans, so have to replace them with something that would co-ordinate with our new Esse range and Smeg fridge-freezer. Matching cream cast iron saucepans are what we’d like. They’re relatively expensive, but many brands have a lifetime guarantee. We look at them as an investment.

Designer Desire: Nobuho Miya

Nobuho Miya is a 3rd-generation Japanese designer practising in cast iron. Working out of the Kamasada Iron Casting Studio in Moriokashi, his designs possess an honesty and simplicity. His bowls, kettles, cooking pots and decorative items are spare, robust, functional, beautiful and tactile. If you love metalware produced by Dansk Designs and Robert Welch you will adore these!
