Price Points: Wooden garden sheds

Wooden garden sheds | H is for Home

Who knew that there were so many considerations to take into account with humble wooden garden sheds? We need one for storing the usual kinds of things – tools, deckchairs, barbecues and the like. A place to keep the unsightly things that are currently cluttering up what we hope will soon become our pretty little garden room.

The first factor is the size; for which we have an exacting 3ft x 4ft dimension specification for our space – just a bit deeper than wide. The majority of sheds that you see with this floor area are a bit wider than deep. Then, should the door swing out from the left or right? Windows or windowless? Apex or pent roof? Shiplap, overlap or tongue & groove walls?

Here are a few examples of small sheds that we came across whilst trawling the internet.

  1. Rowlinson 4 x 3 ft overlap wooden shed: £100.00, Wickes
  2. 3ft x 4ft Winchester wooden overlap apex shed: £185.00, Dunelm
  3. 4×3 garden shed – pressure treated, tongue & groove, pent shed: £231.30, eBay

With spring knocking on the door (we’ve noticed a few green shoots popping through the soil), we’ve been thinking about doing up our garden room and greenhouse. We’ve done some initial fixing up and painting, but haven’t really ‘styled’ it as yet.

This gorgeous rustic potting shed is located in central Pennsylvania and is the look we’d be striving to achieve. It’s got all the main elements that we love. Wooden pigeonholes and shelving for tools and seeds; storage baskets and boxes; a big farmhouse sink; tables and benches to work at; somewhere nice to sit.

There are lots of nice details too – garden-related equipment, the large blackboard, pictures & prints – and of course plants. This potting shed has got everything – every time you scan through the photos of the space, you notice something else.

It’s atmospheric yet practical – we could spend hours on end in there, just pottering around.

Our small Pennine garden has woken up – well, started to at least! We’ve been out at the weekend sweeping, potting up seeds, planting strawberries and some colourful annuals.

We have lots of shady corners, so hostas and astilbes do really well.

Ferns like it here too – we’re really fond of these little ones which self-seed and sprout from the old stone walls.

This is another self-seeder. It can take over a bit if left unchecked, but if it’s restricted within pots and cracks between paving it looks wonderful – the bright green leaves and pretty white flowers really lift the shaded areas… and it’s always good to get plants for free!

We have a little project for the summer, renovating this little, old greenhouse which was about to be thrown on the tip. It’s a house in the loosest sense of the word – being only about 4 feet wide. We’ll try not to lose any of its shabby charm, but if it doesn’t get some TLC soon it will fall to pieces.

We love these bits of metalware in the garden – old dolly tubs, buckets and watering cans.

Also the drainpipe hoppers which look lovely when the flowers start to spill over.

We’ve got our seating arrangements sorted out, picking up a Victorian cast iron bench over the winter.

Also a more portable 1960s metal & plastic weave chair… and this fab 70s floral lounger.

The birds are well catered for…

Although its about time they started to find their own food now.

We’ve made a good start, but there’s plenty left to do… and Fudge is always happy to supervise proceedings.

It’s nice to be able to sit back and survey work done so far though… and plan the next move from our strategic headquarters.
