Touchscreen winter gloves

We’ve featured oven gloves with fingers and gardening gloves with claws in the past – today, it’s the turn of touchscreen winter gloves.

I get really cold ears, nose, fingers and toes in the winter; so at that time of year, I rarely go out without wearing long thermal socks and fleecy gloves. The only problem with wearing gloves when I’m out walking is when I want to take a photo or make a call on my phone.

That’s when the palaver of taking them off, putting them in my pocket and then putting them back on – repeatedly – occurs. That’s when gloves get lost… or more usually, one glove gets lost! Wearing mismatched gloves is way worse than mismatched socks!

I’m relieved to learn that the phone dilemma has been solved by the invention of special material used on the tips of the gloves’ fingers and thumbs. Here are three pairs of touchscreen winter gloves that will prevent my hands from turning numb later this year.

  1. M&S Collection knitted touchscreen gloves: £7.50, Marks & Spencer
These knitted gloves have a classic style with a modern edge. They feature clever patches on the index finger and thumb, so you can use the touchscreen of your phone without taking them off. Made with recycled polyester.
  2. Berghaus Prism Polartec cold weather gloves: £16.65 – £22.49, Amazon
    • POLARTEC Fleece – Great warmth to weight ratio, these super warm, recycled 200 weight fleece gloves are the business.
    • Touchscreen Technology – Keep the gloves on when using GPS and your mobile for wind-beating comfort.
    • 100% Polyester
  3. The North Face Fleeski Etip gloves in black: £35.00, ASOS

Price Points: Dog grooming gloves

Dog grooming gloves

The weather is warming up – and that means that many canines out there are moulting! Even though our Weimaraner pup, Barley has a very short coat, when he shakes, a fine cloud of fur can be seen.

Using dog grooming gloves regularly can pre-empt much of the fur that’s dropped indoors. It will save you so much time not having to dust and vacuum as often.

I find a pair of gloves much easier to use than a brush. Dogs (and cats and other pets for that matter!) think that you’re simply giving them cuddles and attention rather than attempting to slough off excess fur and dander.

I’ve used the Mikki version in the past and they work really well. I think the silicone ones from ManoMano would be even better because you can use them to dry brush or wet when giving your dog a bath.

  1. Mikki dog/puppy/cat grooming gloves: £6.00, Amazon
  2. Karlslund grooming gloves: £16.99, Horze
  3. Silicone bath gloves: £25.43, ManoMano

Price Points: Oven gloves with fingers

Oven gloves with fingers

Every kitchen, without exception, needs at least one pair of oven gloves. You can’t cook, especially in the oven, without something to protect your hands from searing hot pans and dishes. OK, perhaps you prefer to use tea towels. However, when cooking on a gas hob, you could easily catch a corner of a tea towel on the flame and cause a bit of damage to yourself or the kitchen… I know I have!

Oven gloves with fingers are my preferred choice. I find it hard to manoeuvre when cooking with gloves that are like mittens. I like complete movement in all my digits.

would be my first choice. Although they’re the most expensive, you get a pair of gloves for the price; with the other examples, you only get a single one. In addition, after a couple of decades as a chef, I have a number of burn scars up my arms. These oven gloves have long sleeves, giving added protection.

  1. The ‘Ove’ glove: from £4.89 per glove, eBay
  2. MasterClass seamless silicone oven glove with cotton sleeve: £15.99 (ex. VAT), Nisbets
  3. Homegk extra-long heat-resistant silicone oven gloves: £22.98, Amazon

Price Points: Fireside gloves

Fireside gloves | H is for Home

Since last month, we’ve had our wood-burning stoves chuffing away a few times per week. Unfortunately, our current fireside glove has somehow developed holes in a couple of the fingertips… rendering them practically useless for putting a hand into a roaring fire. And not something you could repair by sewing with cotton, wire or fishing line. Can you buy Kevlar thread?

All three of the fireside gloves above look to be made from thick suede leather. The red pair is great value at less than a fiver per pair, but they’re a bit of a garish colour for keeping beside the fireplace.

Our firm favourite is #2, which for most households would probably be the obvious 1st choice. It’s sold singly, which means that, unless you have a left-hander in the house (like we do here) you’ll only need to buy the right-handed glove. We’ll have to buy a pair, but at a mere £17.80, it’s more than a fair price for keeping fingers, hands and arms out of harm’s way.

  1. Heavy duty fire-side gloves: £3.21, Amazon
  2. Protective leather glove: £8.90, Cast in Style
  3. Manor fireside stove gloves: £15, Manor House Fireplaces
