Auction alert: September Fine Art & Antique auction

Trevanion & Dean‘s September Fine Art & Antique auction takes place on Wednesday 14^th September 2022 from 9am. A total of 761 lots are up for sale, we’ve picked out a dozen below that we like and thought you would too.

There’s a good mix of vintage & antique jewellery, fine art, furniture and other quality collectables. If you’re a James Bond fan, there are a number of 1st edition, hardback books by Ian Fleming. Lots of pretty jewellery – of course, I had to include a little Art Deco something here. I’ve been on the look out for vintage ceramic storage jars; in particular – raisins, currants and sultanas. I can never find a matching trio… but these for sale here are in T G Green’s blue – not a colourway I want. My search continues!

Auction Alert: Pictures, 19th/20th Century Design & Ceramics

444 lots are coming under the hammer at the next Pictures, 19^th/20^th Century Design & Ceramics sale at Lawrence Fine Art Auctioneers Ltd in Crewkerne, Somerset. The auction takes place on 19^th January 2022, from 10am.

If you’re an avid wild bird enthusiast (like we are) there are lots of lovely original works of art featuring (primarily) waders; oystercatchers, plovers, moorcocks, geese and greenshanks. We’ve featured a few of these below.

We’ve also highlighted a couple of Whitefriars ‘drunken bricklayer’ glass vases in the larger size. These are highly collectable and continue to rise in value.

A premium of 30% (25% plus VAT) will be charged on top of the hammer price on all lots. VAT isn’t applicable on books or unframed maps.

Any lots purchased online with the-saleroom.com will be subject to an additional 5.94% (4.95% plus VAT) which is applied by the saleroom.com.
Any lots purchased online with easyliveAuction.com will be subject to an additional 3.6% (3% plus VAT) or you can opt to pay a flat fee per sale of £3.00 (inc VAT) per sale which is applied by easyliveAuction.

A designer desk designed by Massimo Scolari for Giorgetti, made in maccasar ebony and beech and supported on two uprights with opposing legs with metal detailing. Also with a matching office chair with adjustable back and black leather seat. Both with makers plaques for Giorgetti, designed by Massimo Scolari, and serial numbers. Desk 161cms by 80cms, 73cms high, Chair 89cms high.

Lot 1046: CHINESE SILK JACKET & MATCHING SKIRT
Late 19^thc or early 20^thc, the red silk jacket with a pale green lining and cross over fastening and gilt metal buttons. The ivory silk cuffs, hem, and shaped facings are heavily embroidered with butterflies, birds and bats and a variety of flowers, and edged with an embroidered border of blue silk. With a matching pleated skirt. Jacket 91cms high, Skirt 93cms high. (2)

Auction alert: 20th Century Art & Design at Stouts Hill House

This week, we’re drawing your attention to the 20th Century Art & Design at Stouts Hill House, Uley sale. It will take place at Wotton Auction Rooms, Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, just north of Bristol. 230 lots will be going under the hammer on Saturday 6th November, starting at 12pm.

There’s an interesting mix of stuff – vintage film and music posters, art glass, mid-century modern furniture, lighting and original artworks. There’s even a piece by Rosslyn Ruiz whose work we have admired and owned.

There’s an inclusive buyers’ premium of 21.6% which is payable by all buyers, whether in the room, bidding by phone or leaving commission bids on the book. An additional premium of 3.6% + VAT of the hammer price is payable on all lots purchased via on-line bidding on the Wotton Auction Rooms website. However, if you choose to bid via the EasyLiveAuction site, there’s a £3.00 flat fee to bid.

They don’t currently offer any in-house P&P, so you’ll have to organise your own courier service for delivery.

Bookmarks: Miller’s Mid-Century Modern

In today’s Bookmarks post, we’re taking a peek at Miller’s Mid-Century Modern – living with mid-century modern design by Judith Miller.

Well, a bit more of a peek, really, as we linger over some of the wonderful pieces on display!

Mid-century modern is one of our favourite eras for interior design, illustration, textiles and product design…

…so as the pages turned, there was a soundtrack of many oohs and ahhs!

Judith Miller is most famous for her all-encompassing antiques & collectables guides which are published annually.

In recent years, they’ve included an ever-increasing number of 20th century pieces in response to interest & demand.

This book concentrates solely on mid-century modern – 1950s to the 1970s being the period generally accepted.

A wonderful introductory chapter covers its evolution and influential designers.

The movement perfectly encapsulated a new mood of optimism after the war years with revolutionary designs, materials & techniques.

The fresh ideas, and indeed disposable income, of a whole new generation began to soar.

There are examples of houses & interiors that encapsulate the era – less cluttered and designed for modern living.

A broad array of objects is included, with chapters given over to furniture, lighting, glass, ceramics, metalware & textiles.

In addition, an extensive section covers the people responsible for these wonderful & iconic designs.

There are about 200 familiar & not so familiar names who are given a short, individual write up.

We’ll just scratch the surface by mentioning Arne Jacobsen, Verner Panton, Eero Saarinen, Alvar Aalto, Robert Welch, Stig Lindberg, Lucienne Day, Per Lutken, Charles & Ray Eames.

The book is packed with quality, full colour photographic references throughout…

…and as with all Miller’s guides – estimated values to accompany each item image.

There’s also a useful directory included of international dealers and their contact details – broken down into categories such as ceramics, glass, furniture, lighting etc.

As well as auctions & fairs and museums if you fancy going to see or sometimes handle wares in the flesh.

The book is well researched and accessible – a perfect coffee table browser or excellent source book for your library.
