The sale of the Private Collection of Malcolm Evans of Neath & Navenby: Clocks & Antiques takes place on Saturday 27^th Aug 2022 from 10am.

Malcolm grew up in a miner’s cottage in Skewen, South Wales and studied for his A Levels by candlelight as his childhood home had no electricity. This deprivation lead to a contrary spirit of generosity as an adult and he loved his British Horological Society pals and sharing his knowledge and skills. His education at Neath Grammar School gave him a passion for science and subsequent medical training at Bristol University lead him to a career in surgery. This lead him to fixing precious things in his spare time and he was a keen horologist for the last 45 years of his life. He amassed a wonderful collection of clocks, watches, tools and antiques and a huge collection of books associated with his passion.

Although the sale contains a huge number of clocks, watches, spare parts and other horology items (of which – we confess – we know very little) there are many other interesting lots.

There’s a copy of the original Marvel comic where Spiderman made his début (shown above). It’s signed by the late Stan Lee and its estimate is an astronomical £30-35… THOUSAND. The original 1962 price was 12 cents – that’s a great return on investment in anyone’s book!

Auction alert: Decades Of Glass – 18th-21st Century

This week, we’re bringing to your attention to the Decades Of Glass – 18^th-21^st Century sale at Opus Auctions in Sunningdale, Berkshire taking place on 28^th October 2021, from 11am. There are a total of 247 lots, however, we’ve concentrated on some of the mid 20^th century examples. There’s something for everyone going under the hammer; estimates range from £20 – £40 to £8,000 – £10,000 (the latter being the Stanislav Libensky vase featured at the bottom of this post).

P is for… Per Lütken

We’ve just realised that it’s been almost a year since our last Alphabet blog post!! Where does time go?

Anyway, we’ll get back on our metaphorical alphabet bike and resume where we left off. The last post in this series was O is for… Owl. So today it’s P – and ‘P’ is for… Per. Per Lütken to be precise.

Per Lütken is one of the great names in Scandinavian glass. He assumed the role of art director & chief designer at Holmegaard Glasværk in 1946.

He introduced lovely soft colours and free flowing organic forms to the company’s output in the 1950s – ‘Provence’ bowls & ‘Beak’ vases being classic pieces from this period. The iconic ‘Aristocrat’ decanter is also much sought after by mid century modern fans. The 1960s saw experimentation with clear & coloured glass to achieve eye-catching, swirling designs. Towards the end of the decade he introduced his innovative ‘Lava’ glassware which retained impurities to give an earthy, rustic look. The 1970s saw Lütken produce one-off glass sculptures along with further mass produced ranges such as the Vintergaek series which incorporated opaline glass into a clear glass body. He continued to design, develop, guide, influence & innovate at Holmegaard until his death in the 1990s.

We often have plenty of Scandinavian art glass available in our shop. We have one lovely example of Per Lütken’s work currently in stock. It’s the small, icy blue vase in our main picture. It has the great man’s signature etched to the base and the date year of 1958.
