Vintage first aid boxes

Collection of vintage first aid boxes

We’ve just had a lovely little mention in the current edition of  Homes & Antiques magazine. We’re regular readers of the magazine – and it’s often a surprise when we turn a page to find one of our products staring back at us. We supply photos or loan items for magazine photo-shoots months before publication, so don’t always know exactly when they’ll be featured. This particular article was all about vintage first aid boxes.

Well, it started with a tour of of salvage dealer, Kate Kaemena’s house – who, as you might expect, has a home full of interesting objects. In one corner, she has a collection of vintage first aid boxes which make a quirky and eye-catching display. Following the house tour, there’s a page focussing on vintage first aid boxes and three of our examples are included in the line up. Most houses have some form of first aid box – as this article proves, they can be both functional and attractive to look at – perhaps the case with most things with a bit of effort.

Pick of the Pads: The Egg Man

'I am the Egg Man' article title page from the April 2014 Homes & Antiques magazine

We’ve got a slight twist for this month’s Pick of the Pads. It’s more a work space than a living space, but with Easter round the corner, the egg theme swayed it.

It’s the studio workspace of Tony Ladd – the ‘Egg Man’ that was in the April 2014 issue of the Homes & Antiques Magazine magazine.

He’s a wildlife artist specialising in British birds. He creates stunningly realistic, hand-cast, hand-painted egg specimens.

His workspace is a self-built, oak-framed wooden studio situated in his garden on the Sussex coast.

We love all the wooden banks of drawers & shelving…

Pick of the Pads: Brixton East

"Loft Living" feature of Brixton East in the October 2013 issue of Homes & Antiques magazine

We’ve chosen this fabulous factory space for this month’s Pick of the Pads. Dating from the 1870s, the building was disused & distressed when interior designer Andy Luckett bought it 18 years ago. After many years of hardship, discomfort & hard graft he’s created something very special – Brixton East.

The converted factory is featured in the October edition of Homes & Antiques Magazine and now incorporates apartment, studio space & shop.

There are many aspects of Andy’s home that we love. It retains a homely, comfortable feel whilst looking functional & easy to live in too.

The original fabric of the building remains intact with big windows, exposed brickwork & beams. The spaces are now filled with character, colour & texture.

There’s no shortage of unusual, quirky pieces – but it’s very well edited and never enters the realms of being cluttered.

It also looks like it’s evolved naturally over time with antique & vintage finds – some still serving their original purpose, others up-cycled for a new lease of life.

The building is available for event hire and Andy also opens a pop-up shop on the ground floor which should be of great interest to those who share his taste for the enticing antiques & vintage industrial pieces that fill his home – the next sale is in December. For details of the shop, upcoming events and more pictures of the building visit his website at www.brixtoneast.co.uk
