This vintage industrial work-living space is the Moscow home of Ella and Nathan. The open plan space forms part of a converted sewing machine factory.

The light-filled apartment has a very practical and useful feature; a sliding screen door can be pulled across in front of the sofa, creating a bedroom in the space beyond – a very Japanese influence.

The fabric of the building provides an interesting backdrop. Muted background tones are lifted by pops of brighter colour such as book covers and fabulous yellow upholstery of a very comfortable looking reading chair.

If this shipping container home conversion looks familiar, you may have seen it before on George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces programme on Channel 4. It’s the Bedford Marina-based home of Max McMurdo – designer, upcycler and entrepreneur.

It may measure a mere 40ft wide, but by using the limited space in a hugely imaginative way, he manages to fit everything you could need into this floating house. There’s a double bedroom, sitting room, kitchen and bathroom. It’s completely functional, with more living and storage space than you’d imagine. We bought this vintage hospital trolley at auction last week.

We thought it had great re-purpose potential. In particular, its suitability to make a fabulous kitchen work station. For starters, it’s made from stainless steel which is hygienic and easy to keep clean. There’s an ideal height work surface for chopping, peeling etc; an under-shelf for storage where you could keep boards, baskets, boxes or jars – and the drawers are perfect for knives or other utensils.

Also, the trolley is on wheels – so easy to move around the kitchen for cleaning behind or positioning in the best light for working.

It’s manufactured by Reynolds & Branson of Leeds and is very robust. We’d say it dates from the 1950s/60s era. The overall condition is very good with clean, undamaged stainless steel. There’s age-related wear to the wheel area, but we actually like a bit of this type of aged patina in places… and we love the flash of yellow too. If you like it and are able to collect, it’s heading to our antiques centre space this week with a price tag of £135.

We’ve chosen a converted factory bedroom for this week’s Get their look post.

The space retains an industrial feel with painted brickwork, wood panelling, old cast iron radiators and pared back fixtures & fittings… and the monochrome colour scheme with its layers of grey and white.

It’s bright and airy – we’re big fans of Crittall Windows, they’re beautiful to look at from indoors or out and allow huge amounts of light to flood into a space.

Texture and femininity are introduced through soft furnishings like the cushions & throw – and vintage feel wallpaper mural.
