Get their look: California garage conversion

California garage conversioncredit

We’ve got an amazing, quirky space for you in today’s ‘Get their look‘ post. If you’re a massive petrol head, there’s probably no better home for you than something like this California garage conversion. This is a space that enables you to live surrounded by your beloved cars, motorbikes and bicycles.

As you might expect from a converted garage, there’s a strong industrial feel, with its pair of huge motorised roller doors and bare rafters and beams. However, a mid-century modern vibe also shines through. It’s a very successful combination – industrial yet crisp & clean. What a wonderful looking and flexible home.

Get their look: Open-plan garage conversion

Open-plan garage conversioncredit

You’d never have guessed that this open plan garage conversion in Sicily was once upon a time a place where vehicles would have been repaired. It’s obviously a former industrial or commercial building with nods to its previous incarnation in the exposed zinc pipes and painted bare brick walls.

What would probably have been a fairly dirty workplace has been completely transformed by the owner into a bright, pristine, white box for relaxed living.

Large vintage industrial storage unit

We thought we’d highlight this fabulous vintage industrial storage unit that we’ve listed for sale today. It’s certainly a large, impressive piece!

It’s been living in our lounge recently. As you can see – if a storage or display unit sits still in our house for any amount of time, it starts to fill up with objects!

We bought it from one of the regular dealers at our local flea market. It’s constructed entirely of metal and very, very heavy. This is where we put it when it got delivered… as close to the front door as possible!

It’s a really useful unit with a combination of pigeon holes and drawers that can be placed in any configuration.

We think the metal has just the right amount of distress. Perfect vintage industrial condition – signs of wear, but not tatty. And the paint is original to the piece – and a nice mushroom brown colour.

It could be an ideal storage unit for almost any room in the house. As we said, we’ve had it in a lounge space where it’s great to display objects, keep CDs or books, tea-lights and so on – with keys, coins and all manner of bits & bobs hidden away in the drawers. It could be placed in a kitchen to house cooking equipment and ingredients; a work shop/craft room storing tools, bobbins, threads etc; perhaps an office space housing stationery… or a potting shed maybe – with various pots, seeds, twine and small garden tools. And if you’re lucky enough to live in an open plan loft space…well, we can’t imagine anything better.

We like it very much, but we did buy it to sell – and we moved something else out of the way to give it a temporary home… that needs to go back! Anyway, we’ve just listed it on eBay with a starting price of £299 which we think is reasonable. You’ll need someone with a van, trolley and strong arms to move it, but it could be the perfect thing!

How to achieve an industrial style in your home

Industrial style is a genre that we love! It draws its inspiration from factory and work spaces. It’s is a look with striking accents without the fuss. Features to be found in this type of interior include factory furniture, large lamps, enamel light shades, sturdy iron staircases, practical metal cabinets and bare brick walls.

The basis for any industrial style starts with simplicity; think cool, natural colours such as black, white, grey, army green and brown. Materials such as concrete and stone fit perfectly in an industrial-styled interior and create a more functional, utilitarian space.

Anything considered natural or rustic  can complement an industrial-style space. Cast iron, leather, brick and wood would all be suitable. Juxtapose the different elements – a stainless steel dining table against a rough brick wall, a reclaimed wooden kitchen worktop with a concrete splash back or stone flooring with a large, worn leather armchair. Bringing these colours and materials together delivers an exciting and stylish place.

When it comes to pulling this style together, aim for a more Spartan  look. You really can’t go wrong with this, it’s simple and minimal.

Bare brick walls, exposed pipes or wooden beams are the starting point of an industrial space. Not every house can boast rough-hewn brick walls; fake it with textured wallpapers that can imitate the appearance you desire.

Eye-catching, statement pieces of furniture bring together the overall effect. Perhaps a large well-worn Chesterfield leather sofa or a dining table constructed from used scaffolding boards. Remember, the furniture shouldn’t look pristine; the more weathered, battered and patinated the better!

Complete the transformation with industrial lighting. Picture large, robust lights such as factory lamps hanging from the ceiling – these are instant statement makers. Enamel or brushed metal lamps suspended with chain or thick rope cables are perfect within an industrial-styled interior.

Complement and contrast with the lamps using beautiful and decorative LED filament bulbs, these bulbs are not only energy efficient but they also have a longer life span… and are really on trend at the moment.

Hard surfaces and clean lines will dominate, so perhaps soften spaces with rugs and textiles – or introduce a bit of natural life with indoor plants or fresh flowers.

With all of these tips you can’t go wrong when it comes to creating an industrial style and décor! Once again remember, less is more – and be daring and bold.
