Get their look: Monochrome living area

Monochrome living areacredit

When I spotted this sensational monochrome living area, I was immediately reminded of Memphis; not the place but the distinctive 1980s design style.

The bold, horizontal black & white stripes on the wall are bisected by a huge, illuminated neon hoop. To avoid being overwhelming. The monochrome is subtly and shrewdly lifted by the deep green of the various house plants and the soft glow of the oak floor and media console.

Hannah sells her beautiful hand-made & hand-decorated concrete pots on Etsy as Hannah Drakeford Design. Like her home, her homewares are so eye-catching and desirable; think Keith Haring for the 21st century.

There are a few things that need to be present if you are considering decorating a glam bedroom. Metallics? Check. Animal print? Check. Four poster bed? Check! Sally’s bedroom ticks all these boxes.

She layers sumptuous print atop sumptuous print; the wallpaper, the cushions and the heated throw. They clash… they shouldn’t work together… but they do, really well.

The Nimbus pillow really caught my eye – it’s absolutely HUGE! It measures 1¼ metres by over 1½ metres. Currently, we have a king-size bolster cushion, I want one of these for our bed.

Go check out the rest of Sally’s leopard print decorated home.

Statement wallpaper can be a really effective and economical way of bringing character and personality into a room. However, it’s not always the easiest thing to get right. For instance, hanging artwork on a busy background is tricky; the two will fight for attention, with neither winning the good fight.

This room (and, in fact, many of the other rooms in the house) has fabulous statement wallpaper and the accessories work with rather than against it.

A mirror on a patterned wall often works, so long as the frame is plain, such as the one seen here. A big, gilt example could also look great against such a voluptuous background. The green felted puffin lamp with its matte black lampshade look great against the wall and adds to the nature theme.

Get their look: Homely rental

Homely rentalcredit

Most adults have rented a property at some point in their life. So what can you do to create a homely rental? It isn’t always simple making changes to an interior that can be easily reverted when it comes time to move out.

Alexandra Gater – who lives in Ontario, Canada – is a renter who shares useful decorating tips with fellow Millennials via her YouTube account.

My channel is all about small decorating solutions you can make to your space to make it feel more like home—from painting your closet door a fun color, to covering your outdated kitchen backsplash with temporary peel-and-stick tiles, or switching out the knobs on your furniture. I really believe you don’t have to pour a ton of money into your rental to make it feel a little homier than a temporary living solution.

She puts her money where her mouth is; she decorated the walls of her rental with easy to remove decals and peel & stick tiles on the kitchen splash-back. Her space is made homely and personalised with the use of art, throws, rugs and houseplants.
