Regula Ysewijn – aka Miss FoodWise – is a hugely talented lady; she’s an award-winning author, photographer, television presenter, culinary school graduate and beer sommelier. She has a striking personal look – and the most beautiful red hair!

In addition, she’s the lucky owner of this fantastic space. It’s probably the closest thing to my ideal kitchen that we’ve ever featured on here! Bags of counter-top space, drawer after drawer of storage, open shelves with photogenic jars of dry goods – and of course the Esse range.

Danielle and her family live in a Grade II-listed cottage in Hertfordshire and this modern rustic kitchen-diner is situated in what would have once been the stable block. In the intervening years it had been used as a garage.

The heritage department at her local council instructed that the beautiful original floor had to remain intact, so it was lifted, cleaned of muck and oil and relaid brick by brick over a layer of underfloor heating. It must have been painstaking and a labour of love, but doesn’t it look incredible?!

How to keep a natural theme in your home

How to keep a natural theme in your home | H is for Home

Choosing a natural theme for your home can create such a calming environment, and there are so many great features that you incorporate into the décor of your home to a wonderful standard. Figuring out where to start when updating your home’s interior style can be tough, but there are a few top tips that you can follow to ensure that you can turn your dreams into reality. So, if you want to know more about what you can do to keep more natural surroundings, then read on to uncover some innovative concepts that will help you to make it happen.

Natural living room

Choosing the right colours

The colours that you choose will contribute massively to the overall feel of your natural theme, as some are far better than others. For example, shades of green, brown and orange are some of the best, whilst artificial tones such as bright pink or purple are probably less suitable. Ordinarily, warmer colours are the best choice, as they occur most common in nature. Bold prints can look good in some instances if they consist of flowers or foliage, but anything else may detract from the aesthetic value.

Decorating with houseplants

Great investments

There are some really great investments that you can make which will be the perfect addition to your natural home interior. Start off by sourcing some indoor plants, these are the best way to bring the outdoors in. There are many house plants that don’t require much care and upkeep to keep looking beautiful. As long as you have a natural source of light they’re bound to thrive. As well as plants, ornaments and works of art with a wildlife theme will be a real hit. You can find unique items from antique auctions and independent makers.

Animal print throw and cushioncredit

Use suitable fabrics

Opting for plain, bright white sheets won’t do your natural design any favours, as you must use suitable fabrics throughout your home in order to stick with the theme. Curtains can come in many great flora and fauna related styles, and there are plenty of faux fur bed throws that will really improve the vibe. Animal prints such as leopard, tiger and zebra are great for more of an exotic theme!

Keeping a natural theme throughout your home needn’t be a difficult endeavour, as the tricks and tips above will show you just how simple it can be to create your dream interior design in no time at all. Start off by picking the most appropriate colours, opting for warm tones over those that might be considered artificial. Include complementary accessories that can really enhance your design, such as indoor plants and artwork. Use coordinating textile items throughout your home, adding flora & fauna patterns to complete your home interior down to the smallest of details. Your dream natural home is so simple to achieve!

Light it right! Bringing more natural light into your drab home

Light it right! Bringing more natural light into your drab home | H is for Home

Depending on the time of the year, our homes can seem dark, drab and uninspired. When we’re struggling to get more light inside, there can be an issue with the design of certain rooms, which we have no way of getting around, apart from ripping everything out and starting again! But what can we do to bring more light into the home as naturally as possible without making any drastic alterations?

Large tree in front of a house

Trim the trees

You may be lucky and have big, beautiful trees right outside your house. However, if there’s not much natural light getting through the window, dense trees will make the situation worse. Try to avoid planting trees in positions where they will cast shadows on the property. If you do, you may need to prune back the branches occasionally.

Skylight above a doorway

Install a skylight

Even though you can’t change the house completely, you might be able to install skylights or larger windows. There are companies like Roof Lantern Solutions that can get you started with installing the right sort of skylight for your home, which means that on a sunny day you’ll have an abundance of brightness.

Room with white gloss painted floor

Use high gloss paint

Because of the reflective surface, the light will bounce back off it. If you can’t paint the entire house in a glossy finish, at the very least, use the ceiling or floor as a way to experiment. Because this glossy surface can reflect light and will also add an extra element to the room, you should see the difference right away!

patterned floor rug

Get colourful rugs

If you want to add more personality, this can make all the difference. A colourful rug is that perfect way to bring more vibrancy into any space. It also helps you to define specific areas of the home.

Light coloured wooden floor

Install light wood flooring

Pale colours are best in any renovation if you’re trying to get more light. Light wood flooring could brighten up the room because of its reflective surface, but it’s also a good material to stop scuffs and scratches standing out so much.

Feature wall painted with white triangles

Go bold!

Even if you don’t like the idea of an all neutral room, going for a bold accent wall and vibrant colours can bring that brightness into a room. It’s all about that energising sensation that daring colours can bring to a space.

Circular mirror over a mantlepiece

Hang lots of mirrors

One of the oldest tricks in the book is to hang mirrors and reflective surfaces in the property. This will virtually double the amount of sunlight in any room. Due to the power of science, we know that light bounces off reflective surfaces. If you’re trying to make a hallway appear longer, hang a mirror at each end. The larger the mirror, the more light it will reflect and bounce around the space. It’s suggested that you hang a large mirror directly opposite the largest window in the room.

We need more natural light coming into our homes, especially at this time of year. And rather than sitting in a drab, dark interior waiting for winter to pass, try a few of these tricks.
