This dramatic black and gold hallway just took my breath away when I spotted it this week. And it’s done the same for lots & lots of people – including Elle Decoration’s ex-Editor-in-Chief, Michelle Ogundehin and interiors maven and shop owner, Abigail Ahern who both featured it on their Instagram feeds.

The stairs were painstakingly done using sheets of real gold leaf – aren’t they stunning? A real talking point!

The Habitat wallpaper has now been discontinued; however, Hulanicki has reissued the pattern in 3 metallic colourways in association with Graham & Brown.

Sometimes you see an image of an interior and can just tell if a home belongs to a man or a woman. This gentleman chic apartment kitchen is a case in point.

The owner, Matt, describes his interior style in a recent Apartment Therapy interview as ‘gentleman chic’ – and I know exactly what he means. His San Francisco apartment is tastefully decorated with a few masculine touches such as the iconic bar stools and dedicated wine fridge.

The perfect pamper room

The perfect pamper room | H is for Home

A pamper room is something that most of us dream about, yet something that we never actually get round to sorting. Some of us will have a spare room that we could turn into something fabulous. Or perhaps your spare room is currently being used as the storage room, and it’s just calling out to have something extra special done to it!

Either way, you’ll benefit from having a pamper room, especially if you’re someone who’s really into personal presentation and loves to go out looking spot on at all times. So, we’re going to run you through how you can create the most perfect pamper room, and why we think you should be doing it!

The essentials

There are definitely some essentials that you’re going to have to get thinking about if you want this room to be just right. The first thing you’re going to need is the perfect dressing table. This is where you’ll be spending your time doing your hair, tidying your eyebrows and applying your face mask. A white dressing table positioned against a dark painted or papered wall looks fab. However, a light-coloured dressing table can be risky when you’re standing your make up on it – so be careful!

Another essential is a big photography style light. It mimics natural sunlight and illuminates the room evenly, giving you the perfect setting to make sure that your outfit, hair and make-up are truly flawless.

Something else you also might want to consider, is laying laminate flooring. It’s quick and easy to install and is a sensible option. With hair and skin products flying around; you don’t want to be constantly cleaning the floor or worrying about staining a beige carpet. Keeping the rest of the room clear and simple is all you need to do, adding in a few personalised design touches.

The style

The overall style of your home should carry on through to your new pamper room. Consider the scheme and palette that you use in the rest of the interior, and apply it here. If you’d prefer to try something completely different, have a look at sites such as Pinterest and Instagram and draw ideas and inspiration for them.

The benefits

There are so many benefits that you’ll gain; one of them being the feeling that you have your own personal space in which to spoil yourself. It’s so much more convenient and enjoyable to have a dedicated room that’s set up for your grooming activities. And it really doesn’t have to be time-consuming or expensive to convert a spare room!

Make your home a cosy retreat

Make your home a cosy retreat | H is for Home

When you spend most of your life busy – and let’s face it, most of us do, then it’s always so lovely to come home after a long day and just relax. The problem is most of us have chores to do – tidying, checking homework, preparing dinner… and all of that other fun stuff.

Making your home into a comfortable cosy retreat doesn’t have to be difficult.

Storage basket with stuffed toy pig and fluffy blanket

Quick grab box

If you like to luxuriate in your comfort but are prone to forgetting where to find your socks, blankets, hand warmers and that type of thing, get a storage box or basket and pop in your cosy essentials. Slippers or slouchy socks are always a winner. Your favourite jumper, best blanket and hot water bottle can also be kept in there. Perhaps even a magazine and few favourite snacks or box of indulgent chocolates! Every week have a simple change of the contents as required.

Hearth

Home is where the heart is, and where the hearth is. Think about your current ‘fiery’ view. Are you looking at a blank radiator or an empty fire surround? Think about having a real fire fitted. Nothing compares to the luxury and cosiness of a real fire in the home – especially in the winter. If this stokes your interest, read more here.

And while fires provide a wonderful focal point, if there’s no space in the property, you can create that cosy warm sensation with underfloor heating. It’s easy enough to install a warmup thermostat so you can control how cosy you want it. Home is where the heat is, and there is nothing quite like that warm feeling in between your toes.

Scent

The smell of your home is very important. Fragrance can greatly affect your mood. Fresh, zingy smells like citrus and mint make you feel alert, stimulated and uplifted. Conversely, lavender is well known for helping you to relax and sleep. Other calming odours include vanilla, vetiver and camomile. How about using seasonal scents? Summer smells like freshly mown grass, strawberries and even sun tan lotion! Autumn is in the air when we can smell pine, fallen leaves and bonfires. Christmas is synonymous with smells such as cinnamon, gingerbread and roasting chestnuts. You can introduce scent into your home in many ways. Use candles, incense, room sprays, room diffusers, essential oils and scented plants & flowers.

Hand of person meditating

Meditate

There’s little use in you trying to relax and get cosy in the evening if you aren’t in a tranquil enough space to do so. Use an app like the Calm app or Headspace, so that you can take part in guided meditation sessions. There’s a range to help you deal with things like everyday stress, work issues, anxiety and tension. Getting your mind into a relaxed state at the end of each day will mean your home will become an ideal place to retreat to when needed.

Clean

A clean & tidy home is much more comfortable and enjoyable place in which to spend time. It’s not as simple as it sounds. Fitting in cleaning chores can be incredibly difficult for those with an already busy schedule. It needs to fit in around other important commitments such as looking after family, work and hobbies.  If possible, do a couple of brief chores during the week and then do a bigger tidy at the weekend. Break up the tasks into smaller chunks to make the whole job more manageable.

Home should be where you can shut the door and feel safe, secure and happy – hopefully these tips help you achieve your cosy retreat.
