I admire anyone that can maintain, at all times, the good looks of a sleek, modern kitchen. Our lives involve a constant battle to keep unnecessary stuff and detritus cluttering up the work surfaces. The washing up always needs either doing or putting away.

This kitchen space makes me feel calm and content; it’s a place I’d love to linger a little.

Keeping simply a minimalist kettle and toaster out on display, for me at least, would be a(n impossible) dream. Much as I really appreciate the ethos, I don’t think I’m ready to be KonMari‘d just yet… perhaps I’ll muster up the courage one day!

Get their look: Vibrant boho lounge

Vibrant boho lounge | © Rebecca Deboehmlercredit

When I bought my first flat back in the early 1990s, I was finally able to properly express my creative side in my home. I could drill holes, rip up patterned carpet, remove ugly tiles… and paint the walls the colours I liked.

When I saw this photograph of Matthew Williamson‘s Butterfly Home range for Debenhams, I was transported back to that time. This vibrant boho lounge is a similar colour scheme to the one I used in my sitting room. I was trying to create the feeling of being ‘inside a box of Milk Tray‘. All deep purple walls and skirting boards with accents of hot pink, shiny brass and mirrored surfaces.

Give your home a style makeover with reclaimed wood

Give your home a style makeover with reclaimed wood | H is for Home

Reclaimed wood is having a moment in the design world right now, for good reason. Recycling old wood is environmentally friendly and reclaimed wood brings a unique look to any home. Plus, it’s an affordable way to give your home a big style boost. From walls panelled with reused wood to recycled wooden accents that give your home some natural warmth and old world charm, there are dozens of spaces in your home that you can use reclaimed timber.

Here are 4 creative ways to use this versatile material in your home.

Bookshelves made from reclaimed timber

Shelving

Shelves look more appealing when they’re made from salvaged wood because the unique colour and texture of the wood makes the shelving a focal point without dominating the room. Consider using reclaimed wood shelves in your bedroom, living room or kitchen.

Reclaimed timber beams

Accent beams

If you want to add some serious drama to your home, reclaimed timber beams in a colour that complements your existing scheme will transform the way that large rooms like your lounge or family room look. Additionally, accent beams in the bedroom can bring the outdoors in and make your sleeping space feel a lot cosier and more harmonious.

Panelling

Decorative wall wood panelling is back according to design experts, but with a modern and updated look thanks to sheets of reclaimed timber. Sleek panelling made from aged wood looks great in an office, shop, man cave or living space. If you want to add some boho charm to your home use panelling made from salvaged wood in several different natural shades that will add an eclectic bohemian flare to your walls.

Flooring

Reconditioning old wooden flooring is a great way of recycling wide plank wooden flooring and beams from old barns and vintage homes. It will instantly add authentic vintage charm to your home and give you that beautiful look of real hardwood flooring.

Home comforts: how to design the perfect games room

Home comforts: how to design the perfect games room | H is for Home

The perfect home is one that doesn’t just feel comfortable, but also entertaining. A home done right is one that you feel you can invite guests over to, who in turn associate your house with good times and a fun atmosphere. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is by building your very own games room, a space dedicated entirely to pleasure, leisure and sport that will wow every guest who passes through it.

You don’t need to live in a sprawling mansion to be able to have a games room – even the smallest apartments can host a den (or even nook) of delights within its four walls. Here’s everything you need to know about designing the perfect games room.

Table football game

Make the most of your space

The key to designing a games room is getting the absolute maximum mileage out of your available square footage. This doesn’t mean cramming every available space full of arcade games, pool tables and vending machines. Rather, it means having the foresight to plan what kind of equipment and furniture your room can host and then installing it in a way which doesn’t leave the room feeling crowded. Always take detailed measurements before furnishing your games room.

Playing cards and gambling chips

Establish a theme

If you want your games room to be a social space that people want to hang out in, a theme is crucial. Think first about what kind of entertainment you want in your room and then go from there. Are you wanting to fill the space with a roulette wheel, mini bar and blackjack table? Then a Casino Royale style Monte Carlo theme is probably what you want. If you want your room to be a place to play CryptoCasinos.com Ms Pac Man and Dance Revolution, then a neon-drenched 80s theme is the clear way to go.

Pile of colourful dice

Create an exclusive atmosphere

Your games room is a sacred space that all who enter should feel lucky to be invited to visit. Making the space seem more exclusive will make your guests feel even more entertained. If you’re going down the casino route, then you’ll want to take some inspiration from exclusive VIP casino platforms like Mr Green and include ‘members only’ extras for your guests, such as ‘private’ playing tables and impeccable service from the host. Little touches such as placing a velvet rope to the entrance of your games room will also go a long way towards making the space feel fun and meticulously designed.

Don’t forget the little extras

It’s the little things that always make the biggest impact. Make sure to include a well-stocked mini fridge in your games room, as well as plenty of carefully-placed treats such as sweets, crisps, nuts and mini bottles of wine around the room. You’ll also want to include plenty of seating for when you and your guests aren’t indulging in some entertainment, which means you’ll want a comfortable and tastefully-designed lounge area for everyone to use. It’s these extras which will show guests how much thought and consideration you’ve put into the space.

A games room is a great addition to any home, one that will make yours feel infinitely more liveable and, of course, exclusive.
