50s American diner inspired kitchencredit

This week, we have this sugared almond coloured, 50s American diner inspired kitchen of Joanne – blog owner of Hardcastle Towers. When I was choosing which image of the kitchen to use, I couldn’t decide on just one, so I created an animation of a few of them!

I love the use of bright colours. The spearmint painted walls, chairs and stand mixer; bubblegum pink fridge, cake tin and wellies; creamy range cooker and coffee machine… all atop a classic black & white chequerboard floor.

There are so many interesting accessories for the eyes to feast upon. There are beautiful, practical items such as pitchers and measuring jugs and whimsical ones like the glitter ball and paper pineapple.

A post shared by Gemma Louise (@gemma_louise_roper)

This teeny tiny bathroom (those are the owner, Gemma Louise’s words – not me being disparaging!) measures a mere 2m x 2m. Despite this lack of space, the room is bright, attractive, functional and orderly.

We’ve recommended many times in the past that if space is limited, make use of the vertical. This is just what Gemma Louise has done; there’s a deep window sill that she’s utilised for storage and decorative terrarium. There’s also a perfectly positioned wall-mounted, extendible mirror for shaving and putting on make up.

The chrome bar beneath the sink is the perfect home for hanging a hand towel – something that’s been done in later photos. Another good clutter-busting action that’s been carried out here is stashing things in attractive storage boxes, bags and baskets. The wicker basket under the sink is probably used to store & hide the spare loo rolls, soap and toothpaste – what do you reckon?

The plain white, floor-to-ceiling subway tiles are the perfect backdrop, giving the illusion that the bathroom is larger than it actually is – and the beautiful floor tiles prove that using large patterns and large sizes in a small area really does work!

Bedroom comfort like no other

Bedroom comfort like no other

Don’t we all just love coming home to jump right into bed? Well, we know that there might be a few tasks in between this that have to be completed, but for the most part, coming home to jump into bed is the best part of coming home. Arguably, the bedroom is also the best part of the home for those of us who like to do absolutely nothing on evenings and weekends.

But, we have to admit, often bedrooms aren’t being used to their full potentials. A bedroom is built for comfort, the last thing you want is items all over the place, a bed that just isn’t comfy enough for you, and a room that just generally doesn’t suit your needs. So, our aim here is to introduce to you bedroom comfort like no other. We want to show you what it means to come home and truly relaxed in your bedroom. Have a read on, and see what we mean!

Bedside table with jar of flowers and scented candle

The comfiest bed

It’s all about having the comfiest bed. If you don’t have a bed that literally makes you say ‘ahh’ as soon as you get into it, then you’re doing it wrong. If you’re really not happy with the comfort level at the minute, then have a play around with different styles. There’s memory foam and spring mattresses to name but a few. If you’re looking for something a little different, have a look at this roll packed pocket mattress to add a little bit of extra comfort. It’s all about getting the balance of firmness and softness just right to ensure you get a perfect night’s sleep. There’s nothing worse than waking up in the morning all achy because the mattress that you’ve chosen just isn’t right for you. It can do a world of damage to your posture, and leave you with broken sleep. The best way to test out what type of mattress is going to be the best for you, is to go to your local home store and try out a range of different styles.

Bedside stool on a fluffy sheepskin rug

The cosiest feel

It’s not all about the bed, it’s about making sure that you’ve got the cosiest feel going on in your room. The best way to do that is to add in as many comfy things as possible. Get your carpet redone so that it’s extra fluffy. Get a big fluffy bean bag and a fluffy pillow to sit on it. If you haven’t seen these before, you’ll be amazed. It’s like sinking into a world of comfort, and you could easily sleep in them! Then, fill your room with things that make you feel comfy. From scented candles to pillows that you could bury yourself in, it all needs to scream comfort to you!

TV ottoman bed

The most convenient space

It’s said that we spend a ⅓ of our lives in bed. I think it’s a figure nearer to half for me, especially in the winter! Some days, I can have breakfast in bed, work from bed, and at night, watch television in bed. What better place to do all that from than a brilliant Ottoman TV Bed. from TV Beds? Their top-of-the-range beds boast a Bluetooth surround sound TV that rises out of the foot-board. They also have a slot in the base to house AV equipment or your laptop/tablet.

Dark blue-painted bedroom wall

The relaxing décor

We think that the key to relaxing bedroom décor is to keep things dark and interesting. Not dark as in black everywhere, but stick to colours like a range of greys, blacks, browns or whites to mix in. It’s much more relaxing to come home to than a bright room blinding your eyes!
