Oven thermometers | H is for Home

This week has been very exciting with the installation of our new Esse range cooker. It runs on solid fuel; dry, hardwood logs – something of which neither of us has prior experience. The cooker doesn’t have a thermostat, just a knob and a lever to get the optimum temperature. So, getting the heat just right for whatever I’m baking is trial and error at this early stage.

Something that would help is an oven thermometer. Whether I’m baking a pizza or loaf of bread in the hot oven or meringues in the cooler oven, knowing the exact temperature will aid in working out how long something will take to cook. With one of these oven thermometers, there’ll be no burnt bits or soggy bottoms!

Selection of food graters | H is for Home

Justin has been complaining about our completely rubbish cheese grater this week. It’s quite basic and a bit ancient, to be honest. We use it almost every day for cheese or Fudge’s carrots (which he likes in his dinner!). Grating is currently an unnecessarily slow, slightly messy process so it’s an issue that needs addressing.

Here’s a short list of three we’ve identified, each with their own strong points. Number 1 is the classic grater – efficient, sturdy & robust – this one comes with its own collect & storage container. Number 2 epitomises form and function, a stylish addition to the kitchen with its copper detailing. And Number 3 is a clever collapsible model which folds away flat for storage – ideal for those with limited cupboard or drawer space – or perfect for camping or camper vans.

  1. OXO Good Grips box grater: £16.95, Divertimenti
  2. Copper tipped grater: £25, Trouva
  3. Fold Flat Grater™ Plus 4-in-1 folding grater: £30, Joseph Joseph

Potato peelers

Last Friday saw our final post in our Gimme Five! series. This week we’re starting a new one, Price Points, where we take a homeware, tech or fashion item and feature a budget example, a mid-range example and a deluxe example.

We thought about calling it ‘Budget, Better, Best’ but we all know that you don’t always get what you pay for – cheap can sometimes be good and ‘best’ can sometimes be anything but!

About 6 weeks ago, we wrote a blog post about some church candles that we’d been sent. A couple of our candleholders were a fraction too small for the candles to fit, so we used our potato peeler to shave off a little bit of the wax at the base. We’ve not been able to find the peeler since.

As the song goes, “You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone!”. I HATE peeling potatoes, carrots and apples with an ordinary knife. Peeling either takes ages trying to do it really carefully or you lose loads to the compost heap.

  1. Potato peeler Rex: 85p, Amazon
  2. Tala traditional Lancashire peeler: £2.25, John Lewis
  3. Rotary Peeler™: £14, Joseph Joseph

Gimme Five! Spatulas

selection of 5 cooking spatulas

I know it’s not ‘sexy’, but a cooking spatula is an integral piece of kit in our kitchen. It’s used for stirring, flipping and getting every last drop of batter out of a mixing bowl.

We only have one in our cooking arsenal, and it’s looking a bit ragged. The white rubber is looking decidedly grey and appears to have been attacked by a serrated knife at some point. Time to chuck it out and invest in a new one. These are some of the (brightly coloured) ones we like…

  1. GUBBRÖRA rubber spatula – green/pink red/green, blue/white: £0.60, IKEA
  2. I Can Cook spatula, orange: £2.99 Notonthehighstreet
  3. Typhoon Gerry Giraffe spatula, orange: £6, Debenhams
  4. KitchenCraft Colourworks silicone spatula in orange: £13.60, Wayfair
  5. Elevate™ spatula spoon: £9.50, Joseph Joseph
