Get their look: Modern vintage sitting room

Modern vintage sitting roomcredit

I could spend a lot of time in this sociable, modern vintage sitting room. The space is dotted with two of my favourites – vintage ‘fat lava‘ pottery and original gulvvases. There’s a lot of colour, however it’s used thoughtfully – primarily reds, yellows and oranges – complementing the wood of the floor and furniture.

The original parquet floor is softened by the neutral area rug. I love the double-sided fire – heating two living rooms for the price of one!

Get their look: Span House living room

Span House living roomcredit

This sunny, double-aspect sitting room belongs to a desirable Span house located in Taplow, Buckinghamshire.

Span Developments was a property design & development partnership founded by architects, Eric Lyons and Geoffrey Paulson Townsend. The Taplow development – Cedar Chase – was built in 1966 and consists of 24, Type 30 houses. Back then, the 3 and 4-bedroomed, 2-living room ‘patio’ houses were marketed at between seven and eight thousand pounds – they currently change hands for over half a million!

This room, although fully modernised, has been updated & furnished very sympathetically. The armchairs (1954), side table (1970) and floor lamp (1960) were all originally designed during the mid century modern era in which the house was built.

Loving our new Frankie day bed

Frankie day bed | H is for Home

The kind people at Happy Beds sent us their Frankie day bed with single mattress to try out this week – and we’re loving it!

Frankie day bed components | H is for Home

It arrived in five well-packaged boxes, each containing the essential components ready for construction. The fact that it comes in pieces will certainly suit those people who live in flats – or have some tight corners or doorways to manoeuvre objects through and around.

Putting the day bed together was really straightforward. We followed the enclosed instructions and it was up and ready to go in approximately 1½ hours. Adelle actually loves doing that kind of flat pack construction type thing! Don’t worry if you don’t have a tool box, it comes with its own double-headed (Phillips on one end and standard on the other) screwdriver for assembling.

It’s very solidly constructed and has arched, flexible wooden slats for extra comfort. The detailing and finish is very good too. We really like the fashionable, soft grey, Hessian-like textile. It sits very nicely against our slightly darker grey walls – and also works well as a backdrop for pops of brighter colour.

We’ve been experimenting with various accessories and soft furnishings to dress it. So far, bright yellow has been our favourite. The grey/yellow combo is a bit of a classic, and was the obvious starting point if you look at the huge painting which hangs on the wall above it.

The Frankie day bed has another nice design feature too. The under-bed, pull-out drawer is the exact dimensions as the mattress above. This means that, if you decide to house a mattress in it, you can have two single beds at slightly different heights – a great option if you have people staying over and need to maximise sleeping berths. Alternatively, it makes for great storage. You can get absolutely loads of bedding, clothes or shoes tucked away neatly and out of sight.

Get their look: Dramatic rental property

Dramatic rental propertycredit

This striking rental property is the home of Northumberland-based stylist and blogger, Kerry Lockwood and her family. If you were of the impression that being a renter meant forgoing a beautiful home, then this fabulous place can certainly change that. We know that it’s not always easy (or even possible) to convince landlords to allow changes, but if it is, then the before and after photos of Kerry’s home should provide real inspiration.

This living room is filled with natural light from a large bay window. The dark walls provide a real sense of drama both day and night – and are a perfect backdrop for her collection of artwork. Furniture, accessories and textiles layer natural tones and there’s a shimmer of metallic here and there. It looks like a comfortable, relaxed home – and very lovely indeed.
