Portable chargers | H is for Home

Since moving to Wales, we’ve been making regular trips back to Yorkshire – a 4-hour trip, each way. As Justin drives, I like to spend my time in the passenger seat working on the laptop. Unfortunately, with multiple apps & energy-sapping programs open, the battery doesn’t last for the entire journey. Often, the battery on my iPhone does the same; not good if we break down and need to phone the AA. I need a powerbank that can top up our tech on the go.

We’re not the type of people who upgrade our smartphones, laptops and tablets on a regular basis. We have a 2013 MacBook Pro, I have an iPhone SE and Justin has an iPhone 4 and (relatively) ancient iPad. All of the above work well, so there’s no real need to trade them in or toss them out. However, what this means is that most of the portable chargers on the market don’t work with our 7-year-old MacBook Pro.

I could opt for the cheap & cheerful, sub-tenner option of a power bank that charges just our iPhones and Justin’s iPad. It only weighs 75g, so it can just be popped into a coat pocket or handbag.

Unlike the mid-range battery pack, the most expensive of the portable chargers clearly states that it will work with our particular model of machine. Despite this, I’m in two minds as to whether splashing out £130 is a worthwhile investment for a couple of hours use a couple of times per month… What do you think?

Charity Vintage: Vintage trench coats

selection of vintage trench coats for sale by & in support of Sense

In yesterday’s Gimme Five! we said how easy it is to get hold of quality vintage trench coats in charity shops. Well, to prove the truth of our bold statement, we’ve found FIVE currently for sale by Sense*

They’re all made by either Burberry or Aquascutum and have a starting price of £9.99. A brand new one would set you back a lot more. We visited both brands’ websites and the cheapest is £110 and the most expensive – a hand-painted deerskin example – £6,000.00!

*Sense is a national charity supporting and campaigning for children and adults who are deafblind. They provide information, advice and services to deafblind people, their families and carers. Their ebay stores aim to maximise the profits from items donated to their charity.

selection of 5 trench coats

A trench coat should be a staple of any woman’s (and man’s) wardrobe. They get you through that tricky change of season period between summer and autumn and spring and summer. That time when a winter coat is too much but shirt sleeves just isn’t enough; when it’s sunny when you leave the house in the morning but it may rain later on in the day.

A good-quality trench coat or Mackintosh, if looked after well and dry cleaned properly, will last you a lifetime. A classic Burberry or Aquascutum never goes out of fashion. You know the ones; khaki-coloured gabardine, just above the knee, belted, double-breasted, epaulettes and check lining.

Vintage trench coats can still be picked up cheaply in charity shops. One of my best ever buys was a bright magenta Aquascutum trench with shiny brass buttons from a charity shop in Brighton almost 20 years ago. It cost me the princely sum of £9.00 – I’ve worn it every year without fail!

If you’re not into wearing second-hand – here’s a selection of great trench coats – all with a twist on the classic style.

  1. French Connection Freeway cotton belted trench: £165, House of Fraser
  2. Ted Baker A-line trench coat, bright blue: £299, John Lewis
  3. Autumn trench: £129, Boden
  4. Womens trench coat, marine navy: £139, Joules
  5. The Angelina trench: £114, Hobbs

Charity Vintage: Apple Mac SE30

Apple Mac SE30 for sale by & in support of Emmaus Bristol(Ends 1 Sept, 2014 11:30:57 BST)

We’re big Apple Mac fans at H is for Home – in fact, we never part with them. We have a vintage Apple Mac SE30, iMac G4 and MacBook stored in the loft; and currently use a MacBook Pro and iPad Mini… and that’s not to mention the iPhone, iPod and iPod Nano!

If you have the space, wouldn’t all the various models look great displayed on a long shelf, charting the history of computer technology? A veritable Mac museum!

Way back in 1989, an Apple Mac SE30 would have set you back a cool $6,500 US. This one, for sale by & on behalf of Emmaus Bristol*, is currently a mere £26.00.

Emmaus Bristol provides “A bed and a reason to get out of it”. They are a community of formerly homeless people who do not claim benefits but work full time in their own recycling workshop repairing and refurbishing donated goods such as furniture, bicycles, electrical goods and bric-a-brac and selling to the public at reasonable cost.
