Coasting along with Rodney Peppé

Vintage set of 6 coasters designed by Rodney Peppe for Crown Merton

We picked up this set of drinks coasters this week. Aren’t they fabulous? They were produced by Crown Merton in the 1960s/70s – and feature six different animal designs by Rodney Peppé, who we’ve blogged about a few times in the past.

One of these designs feature on a metal tray that we have in our own collection – namely the ram eyeing up a giant daisy for his lunch!

We also have another tray with a wonderful peacock design, that pattern isn’t included in this set. We wonder if there are any other creatures that we need to look out for?

Designer Desire: Nobuho Miya

Montage of Nobuho Miya cast iron designs

Nobuho Miya is a 3rd-generation Japanese designer practising in cast iron. Working out of the Kamasada Iron Casting Studio in Moriokashi, his designs possess an honesty and simplicity. His bowls, kettles, cooking pots and decorative items are spare, robust, functional, beautiful and tactile. If you love metalware produced by Dansk Designs and Robert Welch you will adore these!

There are a few places that either sell Nobuho Miya designs in the UK or can ship them here. Links to three of them can be found at the bottom of this post.

Have a look at this little film I found that features his products; shame I can’t read the Japanese subtitles!

Designer Desire: Gunnar Cyrén

Selection of Gunnar Cyrén designs | H is for Home

Gunnar Cyrén (1931-2013) was an award-winning Swedish product designer who initially trained as a metalsmith in Stockholm. He has, however, produced products in glass, wood and plastic.

He designed primarily for well-known Scandi makers, Orrefors and Dansk. My favourite designs of his are the series of silver plate animal figures for Dansk; they include hippos, pelicans, camels, blue whales, pigs, frogs, giraffes, antelope and elephants. Many come up for sale on eBay.

New vintage this month!

It’s been quite a while since we added fresh stock to our online shop. We’ve been busy with various summer trips to the Lakes, Hereford, London and Brighton. Also, the antiques centre where we hold lots of stock closed out of the blue recently… long story! So, that all needed sorting out too, which was quite an upheaval.

Having re-grouped, we’re back on top of things – and have added over a dozen new vintage items across various departments this week. That’s currently more than 400 pieces of vintage loveliness for your perusal!

You can click on each image to be taken to its product page on our shop website.
